This summer, Indigenous land defenders in “Quebec” made the logging lobby eat shit—blockades, pressure, the whole nine. But the state will try again. The Atikamekw are digging in for winter with a permanent camp to watch their forests and stop illegal cuts. Cold’s coming fast. Kick in so they’ve got what they need to hold the line.

30 years of forest defence in East Gippsland, Australia.
This video remembers those forest defenders that have died. But an image of myself locked on to a log loader is at 11:11 min.
I was arrested that morning at Goolengook. I spent two weeks in the forest in the winter of 1997 trying to stop the destruction of the ancient trees.
In 2006 the State Government suspended logging while an independent (but government-appointed) assessment was initiated to determine if it should be added to the Victorian Conservation Reserve System.
After ten years of campaigning for the protection of Goolengook, the Victorian State election of November 2006 saw the Australian Labor party returned, with a promise to protect the Goolengook block within a new National Park.

We need the #BCgovernment to get the message from concerned communities across B.C. that we must work together and with urgency to #protect #OldGrowthForests and #reform #forestry practices. To do so, the next steps are crucial:

How to fast-track extinction
NSW changes are designed to make logging easier
Logging glider and koala habitat is nonsensical
#EndNativeForestLogging"New logging rules in NSW put the greater glider closer to extinction."
"The NSW Environment Protection Authority this month announced changes to rules in logging operations."
"...Ecologists were shocked by a recent announcement by New South Wales environment authorities that we believe loosens protections for southern greater gliders in logging areas."
"But sadly, extensive glider habitat has been burnt, logged or both. Climate change poses a further risk."
"Since the southern greater glider was listed as vulnerable in 2016, its habitat continued to be destroyed. This is poor management for many reasons:
gliders often die on site when their habitat is disturbed
young forests recovering after disturbances tend to be hotter and drier, which is bad for gliders because they are heat-sensitive
removing hollow-bearing trees not only destroys a key part of glider habitat immediately, but it can take decades (if not centuries) for forest to become suitable again
logging makes forests more flammable and gliders are particularly sensitive to fire
logging can change the composition of tree species in a forest, reducing the availability of quality food for gliders."
"Logging those refuges is nonsensical given the large body of scientific work demonstrating its negative effects. And tinkering around the edge of logging rules will have limited benefits."
>>

Displaced koala found adjacent to a clearfell logging operation in the proposed Great Koala National Park
"The National Parks Association NSW (NPA) has obtained video of a likely displaced koala barely 40m from the edge of a clearfelled logging coupe in Pine Creek State Forest within the proposed Great Koala National Park (GKNP).
Koala Hubs contain critical multi generational koala populations and their habitat. Logging of Koala Hubs within the proposed GKNP was suspended by the NSW Government last September, but unfortunately Koala Hubs in plantations were not included in the decision and continue to be logged."

Logging practices:
"It's basically dead" AI reveals the legacy of decades of logging in Victoria"An AI-based analysis of 20 years of VicForests’ logging, researchers say, shows the scale of failed regeneration in Victoria’s state forests. The data, which has been shared exclusively with the ABC, suggests that 20 per cent of Victoria’s state forests have not regenerated after logging.... That’s almost 13,000 hectares of state forest the analysis found to be standing in a state of ruin."
"Now the state is shutting its native logging industry in a matter of weeks, and the forests that were once given to Victoria’s state-run logging agency, VicForests, are being returned to the public."
"By law, the logging agency is required to regenerate the areas it has logged and hand them back to the public in a healthy state. But until now, how much that has actually happened has largely been a mystery."
“VicForests is definitely doing a dodgy job, pretty much as they’ve done for the best part of the last 20 years.... We have a biodiversity problem, we have a carbon problem, we have a water problem, we have a fire risk problem,” Professor Lindenmayer

Re-establish koala populations on fragmented habitats
"Where you've had a population grow from a small number of individuals, there's always potential for inbreeding."
"Drones with thermal cameras have been used to count the koalas and sound recorders are being installed in national parks, and on Crown land and farms along a 100-kilometre stretch of the river. We put the data through a computer and it takes hours and hours and hours of recording and just chops out the little snippets where it thinks there's a koala — then those little snippets get manually verified."
Best practice would be to refrain from logging koala habitat in the first place.

Koalas in a sustainable timber industry habitat - gov update
"The establishment of the advisory panels is another important step towards the NSW Government’s commitment to save koalas in the wild. This will be done while balancing the need to have a sustainable timber industry. $80 million has been committed to the Great Koala National Park in the 2023–24 NSW Budget."
"Timber harvesting operations have stopped in 106 koala hubs within the areas being assessed for inclusion in the park. Koala hubs are areas where there is strong evidence of multi-generational, high-density populations of the iconic animal. These areas account for 42% of recorded koala sightings in s t a t e f o r e s t s in the assessment area since 2000."
"The industry, community and Aboriginal advisory panels will ensure we consult with all stakeholders, to create a park that will both protect our native animals and create job, tourism and other economic opportunities on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales."
All well and good!?

The history of forests
We are Forests: Inhabiting Territories in Struggle, Jean-Baptiste Vidalou
Translated by Stephen Muecke"Governments try to deny it since their interests are placed in other places. They talk about sustainability, ecological transition, and zero carbon economy, but it’s all just a show. Behind the scenes rules the same extracting logic. The various mechanisms for reducing gas emissions due to deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) are only an illusion when they are directly linked to carbon credits and compensation mechanisms. Timber companies continue to fiercely exploit the forests and, at the same time, pride themselves as “acting for the climate”. The cynicism goes even further when these companies, with the support of governments, drive out local populations in the name of global forest management. According to these companies, the native peasants do not have the knowledge required to exploit these territories. They do not fully “own” the land since they do not capitalize it. A paternalist colonial approach indeed!"
"All of today’s modernized forestry, with its super-powered harvesters and heavy loaders, is geared towards this one purpose: planned harvesting and rapid product exploitation."

Deforestation has big impact on regional temperatures
"...Deforestation causes warming at distances up to 60 miles away. The greater the forest clearance, the higher the temperature. This is in addition to the wider climate impact of global heating."
“We show that regional forest loss increases warming by more than a factor of four with serious consequences for the remaining Amazon forest and the people living there.”
“More and more, we are demonstrating the big benefits the forests bring to surrounding regions. For farmers, they bring cooler air and more rainfall. Until now, studies on the impact of forest clearance on heat have concentrated on local effects with a clear correlation between loss of tree cover and higher temperatures in the area where the trees were cut down. The new research went further by looking at whether there is also a warming effect over a wider area." >

EPA EXTENDS STOP WORK ORDER IN TALLAGANDA STATE FOREST
"An initial Stop Work Order was issued to FCNSW by the EPA on 30 August 2023. Since then, the EPA has recorded 89 endangered Southern Greater Gliders and 20 den trees in areas subject to the Stop Work Order. Those areas had been earmarked for harvesting or planned harvesting operations."
"The Stop Work Order requires FCNSW to continue to cease all harvesting, haulage operations, and any road and track construction work in the areas of concern in the Tallaganda State Forest."
EPA located "a deceased Southern Greater Glider around 50 metres from forestry harvest operations. It is not known how the glider died."https://newshub.medianet.com.au/2023/10/epa-extends-stop-work-order-in-tallaganda-state-forest/23100/

Ending habitat destruction, run away land clearing and industrial native forest logging in NSW?
"The former New South Wales premier Bob Carr has backed an alliance of conservation groups calling for tougher environmental protections and an overhaul of the state’s land-clearing laws".
"A report from the new alliance – called the Stand Up for Nature alliance – calls for forests and native vegetation to be protected by “ending habitat destruction, run away land clearing and industrial native forest logging”.
"A review of the state’s Biodiversity Conservation Act, led by Dr Ken Henry, found the laws were failing to protect the environment and that clearing of vegetation and intensifying land use had led to the destruction of habitat across the state."
“The experts suggest a major reset of the Biodiversity Conservation Act and related laws is needed and we agree...The independent expert panel, led by Dr Ken Henry, has found the current objectives of the Act obsolete, and unaligned with international ambition to halt extinctions and put nature on a path to recovery."
Independent Review of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, NSW Parliament, 2023
"Native forest logging is damaging forest ecosystems and the habitat of native species. All citizens should have confidence in the integrity of the programs administered under the Act."

Bellingen's Tuckers Nob Forest remnant vegetation to be logged
Inside Tuckers Nob State Forest (26/27) Dr. Tim Cadman documented threatened species (again). Many rainforest trees, such as threatened Ringwoods were identified. Syzygium anisatum/Anetholea anisata is endemic to the subtropical Bellinger Valley.

Dear Minister for the Environment
National Threatened Species Day on 7 September raises awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 Australian animal and plant species have been made extinct. How you can help Australia's threatened species:
Stop making Australian animals and plants extinct
Stop logging native forests
Stop logging The Great Koala Park
Stop degrading ecosystems
Stop having lax laws to protect biodiversity
Stop under-financing our web of life
Stop fossil fuels immediatelyNo more extinctions!

Logging The Proposed Great Koala National Park
Logging has accelerated since labor was electedNSW Government Under Fire For Logging Proposed Great Koala National Park. The NSW government is under fire for logging in the rainforest area that was promised to be turned into the Great Koala National Park, as the iconic Aussie animal is being threatened with extinction by 2050.

‘Minds were blown’: These scientists were stunned at what’s happening on the NSW North Coast
“This means Forestry Corporation NSW plans to log three times more compartments of state forest within the proposed Great Koala National Park over the next year than they did over the last two years combined"
“It is spectacular. All the variants of this Gondwana rainforest – cool and warm, temperate rainforest and also the subtropical rainforest – is something that is so unique globally that you wouldn’t find it in this particular combination elsewhere... Professor Helge Bruelheide, professor of botany at the University of Helle in Germany, was stunned by what he has seen exploring the forests in and around the promised Great Koala National Park on the state’s North Coast this week."
“The tempo, the scale, the intensity of logging has all ramped up since labour was elected. It is a pillage. It’s a smash-and-grab operation by a loss-making Crown corporation. They are jamming boiled lollies in their mouth as they bolt down the street,” say Graham, who feels let down by Labor."
"One of the reasons the Victorian industry was eventually closed was because citizen scientists proved the state loggers were not properly protecting greater gliders. The failures cost VicForests millions of dollars in fines and access to forests it needed."
"As the legal challenges wind their way through the courts, the NCC is about to ramp up the pressure by announcing the creation of Breachwatch, a network of volunteers trained and equipped to monitor, record and report evidence of Forestry Corp breaches."

Dr. Tim Cadman about clear felling Tuckers Nob forest, compartments 26/27, also know as the proposed Great Koala National Park.

Some points mentioned:
The impacts of clear felling on koalas and wildlife.
Koalas and other wildlife are 'blind' to so called 'plantation' labels or old growth forests.
The proposed logging period also overlaps with the 'vulnerable to extinction' marsupials' breeding season. ( September and February)
The noise, trucks, dust, fires, smoke and pesticides of industrial logging operations making the area unlivable for all living beings.
Possibly an uninhabitable scenic Gleniffer for approx. 2 - 5 years due to being tuned into an industrial site.
The short notice to (some) residents.
The undemocratic nature of non-consultation.
The fobbing off to a (FCNSW) website. At approx. 47 min FCNSW had their statement read out.

The Great Koala National Park misunderstood
A letter by Grahame Douglas, President, National Parks Association of NSW, Korora.Excerpt:
"...The current Government committed to the establishment of a GKNP comprising existing national parks (135,000 Ha) as well as areas of native forest (approximately 175,000 Ha).Currently, native forest harvesting is neither economically or environmentally sustainable, which is why there is a need to invest in genuine plantation forests.
Forestry Corporation currently cross subsidizes native forest logging through its profitable Softwoods Division and direct Government subsidies on the public purse.
Haulers will need to go back to their original areas (hopefully not native forests) rather than the accelerated harvesting occurring around Kempsey, Nambucca and Coffs Harbour.
Clearly the impacts of national parks management are far less than that of FCNSW contractors, which have been fined for breaching logging conditions and even harvesting illegally on adjoining neighbours’ land.
Nearly 90 percent of the NSW timber market is currently supplied from profitable softwood plantations (including Forest Corporation NSW) and would be closer to 95 percent if export woodchips from the Southern Forests ceased.
Pallets, fencing and garden stakes do not need to use native forest timbers from the Mid North Coast. What a waste.
The GKNP is our main hope for the conservation of koala and other native species which is why the public and local businesses support its early establishment."

Home of endangered marsupial hit by state-sanctioned logging in NSW, environmentalists say
"Conservationists say Forestry Corporation of NSW logging operation is ‘knocking to pieces’ a forest home to the greater glider..The greater glider is Australia’s largest gliding marsupial. It was listed as endangered in 2022 after losing significant parts of its habitat to bushfire, drought, land-clearing and logging."

A Paris Agreement for nature?
Sydney will be the host for the first Global N a t u r e P o s i t i v e Summit in early October 2024. It is is concerned with the financialisation of biodiversity ecosystems.
"The “Nature Positive” agenda promotes the financialisation of nature – that there is a monetary value to nature, that this dollar figure could define all that nature means to us, and that we can start trading plots of nature like tokens and feeding into an ecosystem service that only benefits some people, in particular economies."
“The decision makers for all of this would be the exact same industry players and politicians who are destroying nature for profit now. Nature Positive” would be a bag of tricks for them to d i s t r a c t, d e f e r , and o b s c u r e their h a r m for n a t u r e : “destroying your forest is okay, because we’re not destroying someone else’s.” This is not only greenwashing, it is dangerous."

We just have to get out of logging
"Conservationists claim harvesting operations are mismanaged, logged too intensively and come at a cost to the taxpayer and the environment."
"Dailan Pugh from the North East Forest Alliance says the biggest problem is the loss of mature trees, which are the homes and future for wildlife...We need to give our wildlife a chance to recover, we need to value our forests for the water they yield and — most importantly — the carbon they take out of the atmosphere."
"The NSW government has committed to creating a Great Koala National Park, which will take in existing state forests that span from the Clarence Valley to south of Coffs Harbour. Concerns over dwindling koala numbers across NSW led the Natural Resources Commission to lead independent work on how koalas responded to harvesting in state forests".
