On Monday the cyclists will visit #StAlbans & #WalthamCross before ending in London. The originals of Waltham’s Eleanor statues are now in the V&A, but were drawn by Stukeley & engraved for the Society of Antiquaries in 1721:

Books & roses feature on Eleanor crosses - the memorials erected by a grieving Edward I to his beloved wife Eleanor of Castile. What a way to be remembered!
I've just written about this:

Dervorguilla of Galloway, who wrote the 1282 statutes & ‘did the practical work’ to establish the Oxford college named after her husband John Balliol, is commemorated in a statue unveiled last year. This article shows the interesting process as well as the outcome:

@fotofacade How to look at a porch!
This is truly delightful. -
Look what I did today! An external round surface and an internal curve. There is even a flat surface carved out, if you can get your head around that.
I made two schoolboy errors. In my enthusiasm, I gouged a little too deeply and knocked off a tiny bit of internal corner. I still can't believe I did that in a day.
More to come tomorrow!

Behind the choir will be an extraordinary backdrop: a #RoodScreen made not of wood but of stone, twisting and curving to the sky. It's been dated to the 1350s. So, just after the #BlackDeath... Who would have supported innovation at such a time?

A new memorial will commemorate the ratification of a document in 1359. Unlike most paperwork, this one continues to inspire after 667 years. It was on parchment not paper, but it's thoughts that count.
