I'm not entirely sure what all Purépecha people have been up to since the 16th century other than that they definitely continue to do stuff.

I know the dude who played the hot fish guy in the second black panther movie was of Purépecha descent.

Also the Casa Grandes cartoon movie I think references Purépecha history and religion and has a Purépecha director. I haven't seen it and don't think it has a hot fish guy in it.

As with other indigenous peoples of the Americas, the Purépecha were hit hard by smallpox, and after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan, their ruling class concluded that with their depleted manpower they were unable to offer serious resistance to the Conquistadores and chose to surrender to the Spanish rather than fight.

Unfortunately, the Purépecha were harshly abused under Spanish rule, because the Conquistadores were a bag of dicks.

Shout out to the Purépecha people for successfully defending their empire during multiple wars with the Mexica Triple Alliance.

While some internet commentary has attributed Purépecha success in battle against the Aztecs to their usage of metal weapons, because obsidian is also really sharp, the author of this post thinks it is more likely that battlefield factors lost to history (such as morale, leadership, terrain or local politics) are more likely sources of Purépecha success.
