Just got back from my #EAA #Experimental #Aviation chapter meeting.
Presenter was Mike Babcock, who built a full-competition Badlands Traveler and traveled the USA last season competing.
Runs a full-race Yamaha snowmobile (snow machine?) three-cylinder engine with massive turbocharger. Gets off the ground in about 30' and lands at 50' "if he does it right."
Went thru 3 engines last season, T/O power is 9800 RPM. He did not disclose T/O horsepower. Typical racer.

On June 15, 1936, the Westland Lysander made its debut flight. Originally designed as a recon & co-operation aircraft, it soon became obsolete in that role. But its short takeoff & landing abilities made it ideal for insertion of covert agents in occupied Europe.

And yes, those are MOTORCYCLES hanging off the wings. You can do this when you have 600HP from an eight-cylinder Lycoming out front spinning a gigantic prop.

It’s not every day you hear about a STOL Highlander drag competitor #flying an #airplane with a three-cylinder #Yamaha engine producing 300HP. Cranks "at 8200 rpm static and 9300 in anger” so says this Avweb article.
Had a few Yamahas in my day, called them “Yamahammers” not sure why. Most were great motorcycles, their engines are solid.

Sonex is the latest kitplane manufacturer to jump on the high-wing train, joining Van’s to capitalize on the backcountry/STOL momentum.

My sim flight for the night: Brought my “STOL Drag” 235HP PA-18 Super Cub into Johnson Creek, Idaho, and parked next to some rich dude who brought his King Air in here. Probably out trying to shoot Bambi.
The normally 160HP PA-18 climbs like a homesick Angel with the Lycoming 0-540 up front. Kind of a handful to slow down though, full flaps, lots of down trim and a flat approach to get slowed to a gentle grass greaser.

This Westland Lysander is shown wearing a typical Army Co-operation/Air Sea Rescue colour scheme. A successful STOL aircraft, it first flew in 1936. Its most significant role, however, was as a covert liaison aircraft, delivering and picking up SOE agents and those fleeing the Gestapo during WW2 from small fields in Occupied Europe, at night. It has been known to carry three - in an emergency, four - 'Joes' or passengers in the rear cockpit.
