A 19th century (probably) stock block.
Techniques for copying wood engravings, and later engravings on metal, gave rise to an industry in selling printing blocks such as this one of a trapeze artist - a “stock block”.
Papier mâché moulds for metal were followed by electrotyping and finally photographic etching.
Now we have #GIMP 🙂 - scanned at 1400dpi and cleaned

Designers say AI is making stock image sites unusable

Some designers who use stock image libraries to source photos, illustrations and vectors for their projects are finding that they have to wade through more unusable content to find an image that suits their needs, adding more time to their workflows.

Generative video AI tools will probably do similar for stock-video, too.
