  1. In my upcoming novel, St. Nicholas leads a survivor enclave against a Krampus-led zombie horde. ❄️⚔️

Challenge: If you were leading a survivor group in a zombie apocalypse, what is the ONE rule your community would enforce to survive? (e.g., 'No weapons inside,' 'Everyone shares food,' 'Silence after dark'). Reply with your rule and why it's non-negotiable. Let's build the ultimate survival guide together!

  4. O, kom er eens kijken
    A #poetry thread

    i.

A bearded man in miter red
walks through the streets of cobblestone,
a Christmas market, where he said
to children from his wooden throne

that on the Sixth, his day had come
to bring them cheer and happiness
from distant Turkey, his old home
that once he'd saved with his kindness:

  6. "The Feast of St. Nicholas," Jan Steen, 1665-8.

Steen (1626-79) was famous for his scenes of everyday life, which were both sentimental but also humorous.

In this Yuletide scene, the good little girl has a bucket of treats, while the sobbing brother has none...but grandmother seems to be beckoning to him from the back, hinting she may have a surprise for him. Another brother points up the chimney to amaze a youngster. There's a miniature still life in the lower left corner, and an assortment of goodies here and there. One child holds a gingerbread man in the form of St. Nicholas himself.

The scene is chaotic and jumbled, a hallmark of Steen's work, and many feel it was his way of depicting the society of the time. There's also a possible hint of darkness. The little girl's doll is John the Baptist; an odd selection for a child's toy. Some scholars have noted that John the Baptist is the patron of epileptics, and perhaps that it's an indication the girl has convulsions and that he's meant to watch over her.

Scenes of everyday life were popular in the Netherlands at the time, and Steen was popular for his visual storytelling & his tendency to poke gentle fun at society.

    From the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

  9. Watch out, Krampus is on his way!
I hope you've been good enough that he won't catch you.
Have a wonderful St. Nicholas Day anyway!

    Achtung, Krampus ist unterwegs!
Ich hoffe, ihr wardn brav genug, damit er euch nicht erwischt.

  10. On the evening before #StNicholas Day, children in #Germany put a freshly polished shoe outside the door to find it filled with nice things the next morning. That is, if they have been good, otherwise they only get coal…

So I set my alarm clock and interrupted my beauty sleep to sneak through the hallway and place some #chocolate in front of the door of the child on the first floor. Of course, this officially made me St. Nicholas, and I was entitled to the #biscuits left for him. 😌

  11. The Heist of St. Nick.
A Christmas story that doesn’t make it into the carols.
In 1087 two Italian cities, Venice and Bari, raced to be the first to steal the bones of St. Nicholas—known to us as Santa Claus—from a basilica in what is now southern Turkey. Why? Because the corpse supposedly wept a magical liquor that would cure all ills if you drank it or rubbed it on your body.

  15. Children are cleaning their shoes in anticipation of Saint Nicholas coming this evening.
Me: I said shoes, why are you cleaning your wellies?
Child B: They're bigger than my shoes, so there'll be room for more sweets!

    Cunning like a fox.

  17. This week, #FairyTaleTuesday is celebrating Christmas in July, so here's an illustration by Jessie Willcox Smith for a 1912 edition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' depicting the smaller, more elf-life version of St. Nicholas that Clement Clarke Moore described in his classic poem.

🇬🇧 Childhood anecdote: My birthday is on #StNicholas. So the Klausen came to visit me. I was 12, was terrified and immediately hid! They came into the apartment, emptied the liquor supplies of my parents and left me this cake ..

🇬🇧 In Europe the Krampus has many faces. Where I grew up (Allgäu) it's called "Klausen" and has significantly more beard growth. :D
But his task is the same: to cause fear and terror.
