  1. A view from St Lucia for #SchiffSamstag today. This was evening at the end of a hot day on the Caribbean island, about to depart aboard Grand Princess but waiting for Celebrity Reflection to head out to sea first.

  2. Today I learned what #FensterFreitag means and wanted to join the fun!

Walcott's epic poetic work is at once a refiguring of Homer and the colonial history of St. Lucia, of the indigenous everywhere, of the myths which mark poet and people. An extraordinary layering of all.

  8. Our view for lunch today looking across to The Pitons (well, one of them), the famous volcanic plug landmarks of St Lucia. We're docked at Castries but headed south to Soufrière for some island viewpoints, a fishing village stop, botanical gardens (in this heat? Are we mad?), sulfur springs, then some local food and drink. Yep, still stupidly hot.

Walcott's epic poem of St. Lucia, but also of postcolonial culture, Homeric epics, the Revolutionary War, American Western expansion, language and art, aging, tourist economies, and a host of other layers is both poem and dream-state, compelling story and unnerving memory.

  13. Rolling Man track from the new St. Lucia album has a distinct Daisy Jones & The Six vibe. Which is obviously a good thing.

  14. Martinique, as seen from the north shore of St. Lucia.

This was from the last pre-pandemic trip my wife and I took, a vacation in St. Lucia with my folks. How little we all knew of the changed world that would greet us when we flew home.

    March 9, 2020. St. Lucia.

  15. #ArtAdventCalendar Day 13

On the day where St. Lucia is traditionally celebrated in my native #Sweden, I'll share this painting of delicious St. Lucia saffron buns I painted last year, traditionally baked for December 13th and the "Festival of Light".

Let me tell you, these are SO tasty. In fact, I need to bake some before Christmas!

  23. #AmReading My Mother's Daughter, a #memoir by Perdita Felician, sports broadcaster, Olympian and National Champion hurdler. It truly is a celebration of the power of a parent’s love to transform their child’s life. It is also an antidote for all the negative political rhetoric on #immigrants. #books #bookstodon Canada #StLucia

(Goud/Gold=2 Zilver/Silver, Brons/Bronze=0,5 Zr/Sr - C2 = Countries with Charles2 as Monarch)

Hurricane #Beryl is forecast to become a major (category 3) hurricane before reaching the area shown which includes #Barbados, #StVincent and the #Grenadines, #Grenada and #StLucia.

  27. Sharing the bounty

One of my favourite photos ever. We put the mango pit on the railing to see who would come to visit. We had to keep the shutter doors closed, or the birds would fly right into the kitchen and help themselves to the food on the counter (or on the stove!)

From our trip to St. Lucia, November 2013.

They Called Us Brigands: The Saga of St. Lucia's Freedom Fighters by Robert J. Devaux; Patrick A.B. Anthony

The Black freedom fighters of the Lesser Antilles became known as “brigands” during the french revolution. Their fascinating story has never been written, perhaps because they have been dismissed as runaway slaves in a state of insurrection. The author believed that history has been unfair to the “brigands”. He felt indebted to them for sparing the life of his great-great-great-grandmother who was left in their care when the rest of the Devaux family fled to Martinique for safety. His gratitude motivated him to attempt to exonerate the “brigands” from the stigma of their history and present them in a different light, as freedom fighters caught up in a desperate situation.
