Had to stop to photograph these old pollarded #sycamore #trees while out assessing timbers in a farm building yesterday, in rural #Stirlingshire 🏴
This tree species was a favourite for planting around farms and estates in the Improvement Era, because Sycamore grows so fast here in Scotland.
It was usually called the Scottish Plane in 18th/19th century records of planting.
Pollarding was probably done to produce useful pole sized timber but the trees also provided shelter and ornament.

Today’s trees are from Stirlingshire, a forest that I went to regularly when I lived there: striking steep hills and great views all the way up, and at the tops.
It’s on 35mm film, but I don’t have a note to hand of exactly what - almost certainly an Ilford film as I rarely use anything else for 35mm, probably FP4, but possibly HP5.

Pile of Rubble: Polmaise Castle, Cambusbarron, Stirling
Built in 1865, Polmaise Castle only lasted a century before being blown up by the army due to its state of disrepair.
The sole remains of the property are a large pile of rubble maybe 50m long in a clearing - occasional glimpses of angular stone blocks and roof beams sticking out at rakish angles.

Never knew much about my father’s side of the family until we found a box of letters from his cousin. Turns out my great-grandfather (1863-?) was a #railroad pointsman (aka switchman) in #Stirlingshire #Scotland. “The most dangerous of any of the different branches of railroading” says #Wikipedia.
