This time is #StirlingPDF, with their aggressive, frequent changes recently.

They started with the annoying popups pushing you to get an enterprise account. This latest version now asks you to create an account even if pointless in a #selfhosted scenario.

I suppose it is time to start looking for alternatives.

🛠️ Interruption de service : Stirling PDF 🛠️

Mes excuses pour les perturbations récentes sur le service Stirling PDF (V2).

J'étais en train de peaufiner l'optimisation Java du conteneur. En effet, la variable JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS, bien qu'utile pour la gestion de la mémoire, entrait en conflit avec l'outil de conversion interne.

Le service est désormais rétabli et plus stable !

In my experience Libreoffice Draw breaks a lot of PDFs. It allows editing them tho.

Instead what I use
- #PDFArranger to combine, cut and change order
- #Firefox to add text and images ("signatures")
- #GIMP to really blacken pages (export as JPG and use in PDFArranger)
- #Okular to fill out forms, read and mark

Not great to have so many in parallel but this works.

#StirlingPDF seems great! No longer will people have to upload their pdfs to shady websites just to compress them (I hope no colleague did this 😅)

But Stirling made some incredibly bad web design decisions: stuff jumps around on mouse over. The dark style flashes for a split second before the page turns white. Annoying tooltips appear the nanosecond you move the mouse over an icon and then stick to the cursor. DUDES! This is a wonky 1990s GUI. We should have made progress since then!

I've managed to install the Stirling PDF tools on one of our company's mini PCs using #podman. I've tried doing it with Redhat's cockpit admin GUI but it didn't really work, probably because of SELinux or something (it's always SELinux...). I found some instruction for the commandline that worked.

This is all seems like a good use-case for Docker but the whole container paradigm is still so alien to me. It feels like the Javascript ecosystem in a way.
