Ted Tocks Covers - Year 9 - Day 42
Fisherman’s Blues
Life is a journey by train and each song is like a station. Take time to explore. That’s where the magic happens.
“And on that fine and fateful day
I will take thee in my hands
I will ride on the train
I will be the fisherman
With light in my head
You in my arms”#TheWaterboys #MikeScott #SteveWickham #WHAuden #TheWonderStuff #GreatAuntIda #EmiliaClarke #Dawes #JohnPrine #NikoStratis

Maria McKee, Maria McKee, 1989 on Geffen
This was the debut solo album from the lead singer of Lone Justice. She’s joined here by Richard Thompson and Marc Ribot on guitar and Steve Wickham on fiddle.
She’d go on to record six more solo records and some live recordings – but I don’t think any of them did very well in the US – she had more success in Europe.
My copy—via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN—is a 1989 Specialty Records pressing, with original inner liner.

The Waterboys, Fisherman’s Blues, 1988 on Chrysalis / Ensign
The fourth studio LP from Mike Scott, Steve Wickham, Anthony Thistlehwaite, Trevor Hutchinson, Peter McKinney et al. Marked a bit of a shift toward Irish and Scottish music, but including covers of Van Morrison’s “Sweet Thing” and (briefly) “This Land is Your Land.”
My copy – a Carrollton Georgia US pressing from 1988 – via Vinyl Destination in Lowell. I’m pretty certain I had a copy of this in the 80s but who knows where it ended up – and maybe it was on cassette?

The Waterboys, Out of All This Blue, 2017 on BMG
Mike Scott, the creative force behind The Waterboys, has continued to make interesting music and evolve their sound – here incorporating more contemporary pop sounds. It’s a double album, with a third record of “blue variations.” Some of the tracks have lots of instrumentation (strings, brass, overdubs) and some seem to be recorded on the fly with just guitar or piano and drum machine with Scott singing solo.
Among guests, there some fiddle via Steve Wickham (who played the violin on “Sunday Bloody Sunday”), brass and string arrangements by Trey Pollard, and bass from Patterson Hood’s dad David Hood.
It’s a big sprawling three record collection but I love it. Still so much talent!
My copy is the 3xLP Deluxe edition, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR.
