  1. "We know that all interracial groups in South Africa are relationships in which whites are superior, blacks inferior. So as a prelude, whites must be made to realize that they are only human, not superior. Same with blacks. They must be made to realize that they are also human, not inferior." ― #SteveBiko #BlackHistory

  2. August 18, 1977 - Steve Biko, the leader of the Black Consciousness Movement resisting apartheid, was arrested at a roadblock outside King William’s Town. He died while in custody from abuse during the weeks of interrogation that followed.

"So as a prelude whites must be made to realize that they are only human, not superior. Same with Blacks. They must be made to realize that they are also human, not inferior."

"The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed."

  4. "Apartheid — both petty and grand — is obviously evil. Nothing can justify the arrogant assumption that a clique of foreigners has the right to decide on the lives of a majority." — #SteveBiko #BlackHistory

  7. After making a meme-like image and printable page for Steve Biko's memorable line, I'll never forget that the line is his and not Paolo Friere's. A .pdf and .png in the repository has the lyrics (with a Japanese translation) for Peter Gabriel's song too. It was great to hear that a local poetry group used the print-out (copied larger to an A3 page) to listen to the song and read of Biko. A member in her 80's saw the move _Cry Freedom_...

  8. I thought this qoute was from Paulo Freire and never really knew anything about Biko besides the Gabriel song.

    > "the most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed"

Every time Sam Huntingdon is mentioned he should be juxtaposed with Steve Biko as "satisfied society" example: memo to Fareed Zakaria!!

  9. > ... tradition has it that whenever a group of people has tasted the lovely fruits of wealth, security and prestige they begin to find it more comfortable to believe in the obvious lie and to accept it as in fact quite normal that they alone are entitled t o privilege. In order to believe this seriously, they need to convince themselves of all the arguments that support the lie.
