Ultimately, I asked #grandma, if she knew anything about the predecessor of the current war memorial in #Hinterzarten, in order to figure out, why her designated father Augustin #Steurenthaler is still missing on it, although he went missing during it. But all she remembered was that there were naked men on it and that it was quickly removed after the war.

Today, I completed transcribing the second half of the #grandma recording, I had started last week and while at it, I managed to complete the remaining two recordings from that 10th of October 2021 as well. There was another round of picking on poor aunt Sophie #Steurenthaler who cried for months about losing her husband to the war. Grandma was still upset on her, when Sophie passed away some 35 years later, she wouldn't even visit her corpse.
In the next recording, I asked her about her view on the events started by her uncle Joseph #Steurenthaler, that ultimately led to the murderer of #Polish forced laborer Stefan Kozłowski in 1941 (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kozłowski-397)

Today's #grandma recording from October 2021 I couldn't transcribe in one round. I is 28:44 long and I had to stop after 20 minutes and over 160 bulleted lines of notes.
It mainly revolved around the mandatory social year, grandma did at her aunt Sophie #Steurenthaler ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-54 ), who lost her husband to the war in that time. She was crying all day for months, which made grandma furious. She promised herself, that she would never be like this. And she said, she wasn't, when her own husband passed away about 20 years later.
After she left from Sophie, since that one didn't have work for her anymore, she managed to work for an evacuated orphanage in her neighborhood. She had huge fights with her dad about it, since she made 1 Mark an hour, while he only received 38 Pfennig with working in the forest for the state. I found it funny, that this story popped up this close to #InternationalWomensDay, where #GenderPayGap is one of the central topics usually.

#Grandma also mentioned her foster-child introducing her to a waitress with the rare name #Steurenthaler (grandma's maiden name) in a restaurant in #Hamburg in the 1970s(?). Unfortunately, I've still not been able to establish contact to Steurenthalers there nor to find the actual connection to them. It might have been https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-11, but I don't know a lot about her due to privacy laws.

It seems that I've spent the last two hours researching the administrative history of #Hungary (in order to be able to maybe create the Hungarian #Steurenthaler branch during #January2026ConnectAThon) and how to add the results to #Wikidata (in order to be able to have the locations generated by the #WikiTree browser extension #WikiTreeBEE then). At least, I've found a Hungarian Wikidata user and three German gazetteers from 1780 until 1845 in the process (see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Hungary_resources#Gazetteers_and_Directories ) #Nerdkram

Now also done with this week's #grandma recording: Among others, she told the sad story of the chocolate Easter bunny, she had received from her godfather Edwin #Steurenthaler. She never had seen such a beautiful Easter bunny before, so she wanted to keep it and left it in the room on the table. At one point, the poor bunny had a huge hole in the belly, because it had been standing in the sun for a long time. Grandma cried a lot.

One of this week's quite belated #grandma recordings mentioned her father Ludwig #Steurenthaler https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-2, who reportedly as a kid "didn't know neither Christmas nor cake". He always got upset, when his wife's family would bake #Christmas #cookies ... but he ate them anyway. At one point, he devoured a whole bag of them. He threw up from it and was sick for most of the holidays.

In one of today's #grandma recordings, she told me about her memory of being a 4 year old being taken by her grandma to visit her other grandfather Joseph #Steurenthaler https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-4: He gave her a 1 Reichsmark coin as a gift, which her grandma told him was being too much (for the kid). My grandma, being worried about having to give it back, swiftly replied: "no, it's not!"

Today's #grandma recording mentioned her brother Ludwig #Steurenthaler and how he regularly was sent to get the neighbor's horse - at the age of three. He wasn't afraid at all of the huge animal, while grandma, his nine years older sister was and couldn't be sent for the job. At the same age, he was also already #skiing. People explained it with the fact, that he almost was born while his mother was on #ski.
Only one record from the year 2020 left.

Transcribed the first of the last three #grandma recordings for 2020. A big part was about her father. As a soldier in #WW1, he was stationed in #Alsace/#Elsass at/near Château de Landskron. He kept hearing the bell of nearby Mariastein Abbey in Canton #Solothurn in #Switzerland. He wanted to go there after the war. Grandma was convinced that he got married there. He didn't. But I've found a previously unknown wedding of another #Steurenthaler couple when asking them to check.

Couldn't sleep anymore and took the chance to document one of the Polish forced laborers, who used to work for my great-grandfathers brother Joseph #Steurenthaler. Meet Marianna Pióro:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pióro-7I really like, how one can link people on #WikiTree with each other, regardless of their relationship. That's a big advantage in comparison to the collaborative trees on #FamilySearch and #Geni

#Ahnenforschung / #Genealogy help needed:
Does this #Steurenthaler #wedding picture show an 1885 or a 1927 wedding in Germany?
Ist das eine Hochzeit von 1885 oder von 1927?

- #Gelbi only hit my shirt and not my freshly showered head
- Paul #Steurenthaler has an improved #WikiTree profile at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-120
- my wife was nice to me the whole weekend, although I was very devastated and upset about having to go to work in presence for the next four days (without any benefit or purpose and yes, I know it's a luxury problem, I'm sorry, shout-out to all those people doing jobs that really can't be done from home - you rock!)

Belated #3GoodThings
- made huge progress on the #WikiTree profile of August #Steurenthaler https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-150 and also dropped his name at the #Stadtwiki #Karlsruhe
- coded to make @apotheken post less often than once per hour (when trying to put it into operation, I discovered that @mastofeed meanwhile natively supports longer cycles 😂)
- understood a bit about the inner workings of the WikiTree Browser Extension (even though, I shelved my changes)

Work was a downer, but:
- found a new mystery while setting up the page https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Steurenthaler_in_Newspapers for the #Steurenthaler #OneNameStudy
- managed to help out @magnusmanske with something I picked up at @wikidata working on and with the Wikidata Places feature in #WikiTreeBEE
- my #Mastodon bot accounts keep posting and are also starting to have interactions

- managed to write a passage about my ancestor Johann #Steurenthaler https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-10 and bis neighbors getting sued for flooding his neighbor's meadow as result of their improved dam (as opposed to his dad, who had been sued for not letting enough water run through it 27 years before)

I originally thought, he was from #Rippoldsau and she told me about the nice people from there, she had met on a bus trip to Norway some years ago. They also visited her afterwards and called for her birthday. But Josef #Steurenthaler from "Ripertsau" was in fact from Ruprechtsau aka Robertsau in #Strasbourg/#Straßburg, where I found him in newly indexed #FamilySearch records some weeks ago when revisiting the topic. A presentation at #Genealogica2025 had mentioned the area. #genealogy

In today's #grandma recording, I told her about Josef #Steurenthaler from the #Gummersbach area and how I can't connect him to her and her father's Steurenthaler family. What a coincidence, that I found his origin some weeks ago and created his profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-184 during this weekend's #April2025ConnectAThon. I also created profiles for 26 descendants and their spouses, which had received from another researcher back then in 2019.

Today's #grandma recording mentioned Albert #Steurenthaler, who used to pick on grandma's aunt, for only having one child. "If that one dies, you won't have anyone", he said, bragging with his six (or five?) children. Then #WorldWarII came and five of his children died. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-82 #genealogy

Forgot #3GoodThings, maybe I can find some now?
- managed to improve the #WikiTree profile of Creszentia #Steurenthaler https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-32 ; she now also has a first husband, who died a few months after marriage. Looks like I created his father during #July2022ConnectAThon
- post lunch meeting got cancelled, so I had the chance for a walk with my imaginary dog at noon in the sun
- I had milk rice left for snacking in the afternoon (and there's still some left)

Yesterday, I called a town hall because of a story about a pub/inn #grandma had told me. I was looking for a place that was owned by a #Steurenthaler family. The woman told me about privacy rights, but I said I'm only looking for a local history buff. She gave me a number. He knew all inns and their history, but no hit. Still was a pleasant talk. I also managed to do some emails in the morning and some paperwork in the evening (leftovers from weekend).

Today's #grandma recording told the story of a woman, who came from the #Hamburg area to Black Forest during the war (maybe to #Heuweiler). There she married somebody named #Steurenthaler, which also was grandma's maiden name. The man, who used to be grandma's foster kid, introduced the two women to each other. She was a waitress in Hamburg back then. Maybe she is identical to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Steurenthaler-11, of whom I so far only know a death date and a short clip on YouTube.
