  1. Various Artists, Tommy Boy’s Baddest Beats, 2022 on Tommy Boy

I don’t normally chase special releases put out for Record Store Day, but this was an “RSD First” release in 2022, limited to 3500 copies. Great collection of songs from Tommy Boy:

Naughty By Nature – Hip Hop Hooray

Stetsasonic – Talkin’ All That Jazz

Queen Latifah – Wrath of My Madness

  6. 1000 Day Album Challenge (#63) Cymande: Cymande (1972) [03.03.24]

time has been lost in trying / we have been left outside / looking at passions dying / emotions grow strong all the time…

if you’re a fan of groove-oriented music and don’t Cymande the time has come to change that. Cymande were a black British funk outfit whose sound featured elements of funk, soul. rock, and African music with strong undertones of Rastafarianism. their particular groove tends to be slow, but hypnotic.

there are three tunes on their debut that people might recognize without ever hearing the band because Dove, Bra, and The Message have each been sampled dozens of times by acts such as De La Soul, Gang Starr, Def Jef, MC Solaar, Masta Ace, The Coup, Fugees, Wu-Tang Clan, and EPMD.

I truly appreciate the impact that Hip Hop’s sampling aesthetic has had on the breadth and depth of my musical interests and tastes. Cymande is one of those bands that would have likely fallen through the cracks for me if their music had not been kept alive and reinvigorated by the producers who sampled them. without them I might never had sought out their music.

Stetsasonic put it perfectly on their classic tune Talkin’ All That Jazz, “tell the truth, James Brown was old / ‘til Eric and Rakim came out with I Got Soul / rap brings back old R&B / and if we would not, people could've forgot”
