I can see why this 1927 work, with its drugs, sex, extended passages on the mysteries of personal identity with a sprinkling of "Asian" philosophy was a success with counterculture devotees in the sixties and seventies; you can shelve it with your Carlos Castanedas and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. I have to say that I found much of what engaged the hippie reader to consist of hokey pseudoprofundities.
Nevertheless, the novel interested me as a product of the German twenties - the encounter of traditions of learning and Bildung with the new urban world of jazz, night clubs, and emancipated women.
