  9. "It's right that you should do all the work and burn all the midnight oil, because the guy with the cigar and the little wings has got a bag of magic. There's stuff in there that can change your life.
    Believe me, I know." (3/3)

  12. "You have to do all the grunt labor, in other words, while the muse sits and smokes cigars and admires his bowling trophies and pretends to ignore you. Do you think this is fair? I think it's fair. He may not be much to look at, that muse-guy, and he may not be much of a conversationalist (what I get out of mine is mostly surly grunts, unless he's on duty, but he's got the inspiration." (2/🧵 )

  18. Sitting down to watch THE LONG WALK on HBO tonight. Fingers crossed it doesn’t suck, because I loved the novella. Or was it a book? It was part of “The Bachman Books” collection I had way back when.

    Anyone seen it? Thoughts?

  22. After enjoying The Dark Half novel, despite King being VERY wrong lately on politics, I'm going to give the movie a second chance. I wasn't a huge fan of it the first time, being a Creepshow superfan who wanted to love them reteaming, but perceptions came change from reading a book and time.

  27. "They drank because it's what alkies are wired up to do. Creative people probably do run a greater risk of alcoholism and addiction than those in some other jobs, but so what? We all look pretty much the same when we're puking in the gutter." (4/4 )

  30. "Any claims that the drugs and alcohol are necessary to dull a finer sensibility are just the usual self-serving bullshit. I've heard alcoholic snowplow drivers make the same claim, that they drink to still the demons. It doesn't matter if you're James Jones, John Cheever, or a stewbum snoozing in Penn Station; for an addict, the right to the drink or drug of choice must be preserved at all costs. " (3/🧵 )

  33. "They are the writers who largely formed our vision of an existential English-speaking wasteland where people have been cut off from one another and live in an atmosphere of emotional strangulation and despair. These concepts are very familiar to most alcoholics; the common reaction to them is amusement. Substance-abusing writers are just substance abusers - common garden-variety drunks and druggies, in other words." (2/🧵 )

  39. Finished reading The Dark Half for the first time (but having had seen the film adaptation). It was pretty good. A goofy premise that's never fully explained, and like MANY King books it is kind of anticlimatic and limps across the finish line, but I generally enjoyed the experience.
