Lo que detestaba era que sentía que Kubrick había eliminado el alma de su historia.
En la novela, Jack Torrance es un hombre normal, un padre con problemas de alcoholismo que va siendo destruido lentamente por el hotel.
Para King, la tragedia estaba precisamente en ver cómo alguien bueno termina corrompido.

Sin embargo, consideraba que Jack Nicholson parecía completamente desequilibrado desde el principio, eliminando toda esa evolución.

También criticó el tratamiento de Wendy Torrance.
En el libro era una mujer mucho más fuerte y compleja, mientras que en la película aparece constantemente aterrorizada y vulnerable.

Y había otra diferencia importante: para King, el hotel Overlook era literalmente una entidad maligna viva.
Kubrick prefirió jugar más con la locura psicológica, el aislamiento y la ambigüedad.

Por eso, en 1997, King produjo su propia miniserie de El Resplandor y puso una condición innegociable: debía rodarse en el auténtico Stanley Hotel.

Pero la 217 no es el único lugar del edificio rodeado de historias extrañas.

El cuarto piso es considerado la zona más inquietante del hotel.
Antiguamente estaba destinado a sirvientes, niñeras y niños de familias adineradas.
Hoy muchos huéspedes afirman escuchar risas infantiles, pasos corriendo por los pasillos y puertas de armarios abriéndose solas durante la madrugada.

La habitación 418 es una de las más solicitadas precisamente por esos relatos.

También existen historias relacionadas con los fundadores del hotel.

Algunos empleados aseguran haber visto a Freelan Oscar Stanley caminando por el vestíbulo o la sala de billar como si siguiera supervisando el negocio más de un siglo después de su muerte.

Y su esposa Flora Stanley, apasionada pianista, protagoniza otra de las leyendas más conocidas: clientes y trabajadores aseguran escuchar música de piano saliendo del salón de baile completamente vacío durante la noche.

Lo curioso es que, pese a toda la leyenda negra, el Stanley Hotel tiene una historia bastante tranquila comparada con el Overlook ficticio.

Nunca hubo asesinatos masivos ni cuidadores asesinando a sus familias.
El único gran accidente documentado históricamente fue la explosión de gas de 1911.

Tampoco queda aislado por nieve extrema como en la novela.
Está muy cerca del pueblo de Estes Park y sigue conectado por carretera durante el invierno.

Pero la ficción terminó devorando completamente la realidad.

Hoy miles de personas viajan hasta allí buscando vivir algo extraño.
Dormir en la famosa habitación 217 cuesta entre 330 y 450 dólares por noche y suele requerir reservas con muchos meses de antelación.

El hotel organiza tours nocturnos, visitas especializadas llamadas The Shining Tour, recorridos paranormales y eventos temáticos masivos como el Shining Ball, donde los asistentes acuden disfrazados como personajes del universo de Stephen King.

Y el negocio sigue creciendo.

El Stanley mantiene actualmente una alianza con Blumhouse, la famosa productora de cine de terror, para construir un enorme centro cultural valorado en 60 millones de dólares.
El proyecto incluirá nuevas habitaciones, espacios de exposiciones y un museo dedicado al terror y al cine fantástico, con apertura prevista para 2028.

Todo surgió de una sola noche.

Un hotel vacío, una pesadilla extraña, un cigarrillo frente a las montañas y un escritor incapaz de dormir terminaron creando uno de los lugares más famosos del terror moderno.
