Pope St. John Paul II affirms that “praying for the souls in purgatory is the highest act of supernatural charity.” The Church, ever conscious of her vocation to love, has always been animated by this fraternal charity, inviting her children to pray and do penance on behalf of the faithful departed. This is expressly approved by the Bible: “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Mac 12:46). In response to this invitation, the Carmelite Order through the centuries of her existence, has developed a strong sense of communion with the suffering Church (the souls in purgatory).

It very well could be the only time we could say a major novelists has written a twin peaks fan fiction.
Infinitely quotable and self consciously elusive.

Stella Maris is perfect.
The Passenger is more like life.

#ThePassenger and #StellaMaris : the bottom line, a brilliant answer to a puzzle we are always excluded from.
As far as books go I felt nothing #CormacMccarty would write could complete with Blood Meridian. I was wrong.
I think the passenger works better in print. The nature of Stella Maris as a dialogue with a definitive performance make it feel like a transcript of the miracle of its audiobook.
Tragic heroic flaws incongruent with a reality with no patience.

Finished #reading #StellaMaris by #CormacMcCarthy & I’m slightly underwhelmed.
Avoiding spoilers, this is a companion piece to #ThePassenger. I’m not sure, however, that this contributes anything which was not hinted at there.
#StellaMaris doesn’t really have a narrative & despite its obvious ambition, it feels somewhat slight & insubstantial.
Regardless, there are provocative ideas here & passages of real beauty.
FWIW, I gave it 3/5 on #Goodreads.

I’ve finished #reading my first book of 2023 - #ThePassenger by #CormacMcCarthy. One of the (unfair) criticisms of McCarthy is that he writes places better than people. This is very different from his previous stuff &, I think, confounds that critique.
The writing is, as one would expect, stark, but with a brutal beauty. I’ve rated this 5/5 on #Goodreads - but I want to read it again… But I’m going to tackle #StellaMaris first.
