  1. BREAKING: We're putting the Trump administration on legal notice for killing and harming winter-run Chinook #Salmon, Central Valley #Steelhead, and Green #Sturgeon in the Bay-Delta.

“The Bureau of Reclamation is blatantly violating the #EndangeredSpeciesAct and putting the Bay’s most iconic fish species at greater risk of extinction,” as our lead attorney Eric Buescher said. “There is simply no excuse for its actions or refusal to comply with the law."

Thanks to our great coalition partners at the Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of the River

  2. A new plan for California's water would increase the chances that salmon, smelt & steelhead would go #extinct: "Not only do the proposed operations make things no better (for fish in the San Francisco Bay-Delta), they actually make things worse," as our science director @jarosenfield told @CALMatters

  3. #Fish & #Wildlife: The #KoksilahRiver supports regionally significant #aquatic #ecosystems and fish species, including #chinook, #coho and #chum #salmon as well as #steelhead and resident #trout. These fish populations are both culturally and economically significant to local First Nations. It is essential to the survival of many species of #birds, #mammals, #reptiles, and #amphibians.

#Farms & #Vineyards: Approximately 15% of the lower watershed supports a significant #agricultural community including many large dairy farms as well as smaller mixed and organic farms. The pastoral landscape is a also a favorite wine-touring route and is a thriving and expanding #RuralTourism business.

Forest: Approximately 73% of the #KoksilahWatershed is Privately Managed #Forest Lands and another 6% is Crown #Forestry Lands.

#Recreation Opportunities: The Koksilah Watershed is home to several parks including the #KoksilahRiverProvincialPark. It is enjoyed by many in the valley as a refreshing place to swim on hot summer days because the water temperature is always cooler than the #Cowichan River. It is also used extensively by white water paddlers, particularly in the winter months.

  8. The #CowichanRiver #estuary is one of the largest & most important in #BritishColumbia. The #watershed drains 90,000 hectares & provides #CriticalHabitat to dozens of #fish species, including #steelhead, #Chinook, #chum, #coho & #PinkSalmon, as well as brown, #cutthroat & #RainbowTrout. But the #Cowichan’s troubles are by no means unique; they are a #CaseStudy for a much larger problem.

#TimberCompanies store #LogBooms all along the #BCcoast, says Jamieson Atkinson, a fish #biologist & program manager for the #Aquatic #Research & #Restoration Centre at #BritishColumbiaConservationFoundation. “It’s shocking.” While #estuaries make up less than 3% of British Columbia’s coast, they provide rich #habitat for 80% of the province’s coastal #wildlife. The #FraserRiver estuary, near #Vancouver on the mainland, supports more than 300 species of #birds & 80 species of fish & #shellfish for at least part of their life cycles.

  10. #Biden earmarks half a billion for #salmon on upper Green River seattletimes.com/seattle-news/

"An additional $500 million could be on its way to help unlock almost half, or about 100 river and stream miles, of the #GreenRiver’s historical salmon spawning and rearing habitat... in the upper reaches, Chinook and coho salmon, and #steelhead trout, will lay their eggs. Later, baby #fish will emerge and eventually use the new passage to make their way toward downstream side channel and estuarine habitat"

  11. Klamath River Dam Removals americanrivers.org/2024/02/tra

"With #Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, $800 million was made available for #DamRemoval... The removals will open access to more than 400 miles of habitat for #salmon and #steelhead #trout, help restore #Tribal #FoodSovereignty and cultural justice, and improve the health and #WaterQuality of the river. Removing the #dams has been a decades-long effort instigated by #Indigenous grassroots advocates"

"The #ColumbiaRiver Basin was once the world’s greatest salmon-producing river system, with at least 16 stocks of salmon and #steelhead. Today, four are #extinct and seven are #endangered... #Dams are a main culprit behind the salmon’s decline... Congressional #Republicans oppose #DamBreaching and have vowed to block it."

  13. The #EndangeredSpecies Act, 50 years in: $1.2B per year, but mostly a few #species
Associated Press analysis of #2020 data found #fish got 67% of spending, the majority for several dozen #salmon and #steelhead populations in #California, #Oregon and #Washington. #Mammals were a distant second with 7% of spending and #birds had about 5%. #Insects received just 0.5% of the money and #plants about 2%. Not included in those percentages is money divided among multiple species. fortune.com/2024/01/03/endange

  14. Hiked with a friend the other day in a lull between storms. Many local rivers are at flood stage. Eel river in far northern CA is the third largest watershed in CA, and the third siltiest river on earth after the Yangtze, and Mississippi. 100% caused by humans, bad logging practices, and bad road building. People use to come from all over the world to fly fish steelhead, and salmon in clear water. Now they are both listed as endangered in the watershed. #salmon #steelhead #logging #watersheds # EelRiver
