Apparently 20 years ago today I saw #SteeleyeSpan play someplace out in godforsaken far west London - Hayes perhaps? They were nothing if not prompt; we arrived at the theatre right at 8:00pm, only to be shushed repeatedly as we made our way past irritated boomers in musty tweed coats to our seats - SS were already halfway through the first song. Despite calling out for it, they didn't play "Stookie", #MaddyPrior's ill-fated theme song from a mid-80s STV mini series about wayward Glaswegian youth. Still, this was a kind of Welcome To England moment for me: I'd only recently relocated there from sunny California, and here I was singing along to powerful, intense versions of "Long Lankin" and "Cold Haily Night". A memorable evening for sure.
