Teil 3: Der Endgegner Gaming 🎮
Digitale Souveränität ist wichtig, aber der Spaß darf nicht auf der Strecke bleiben. Ich bin auch Gamer. WoW, D4, Anno 117 – das ist mein Feierabend-Yoga.
Der Wechsel zu Linux brachte hier die größte Hürde: Meine Nvidia RTX 2060.
Unter Linux (speziell bei einem Rolling Release wie Tumbleweed) ein ständiger Kampf. Proprietäre Treiber, schwarze Bildschirme nach Kernel-Updates, Gefrickel. 🤯
Es fühlte sich an, als würde die Hardware gegen das Betriebssystem arbeiten.
Die Lösung war radikal, aber konsequent: Hardware-Tausch.
Raus mit der Nvidia, rein mit einer AMD Radeon 6800.
Der Unterschied? Tag und Nacht. ☀️
Dank der offenen Mesa-Treiber läuft die Karte "out of the box". Kein Treiber-Voodoo mehr. Lutris an, spielen.
Sogar Blizzard-Titel laufen jetzt butterweich.
Lektion gelernt: Echte Unabhängigkeit braucht manchmal auch die passende Hardware.

I'll start. I use a #Debian flavor called #MXLinux. Why? Because I'm comfortable with it. I wouldn't consider it 'beginner' friendly, but I went through a phase of #distro hopping, as one does, but, as #ToddHoward always exclaims "It just works". I can play 95% of the games I own through #Steam & #GOG (GoodOldGames) with the use of #SteamProton #Lutris & #WINE. I have productivity tools at my disposal & can usually navigate them with little issue. Give it a shot if you're ready to distro hop.

Has anybody gotten #ProtonDB to accept adding a #Chromebook using the official #Steam client (#borealis)? It parses the data correctly but it says it's incompatible. What does that even mean‽ Does it think I'm using a #SteamDeck or are they discriminating against #ChromeOS? Going to do some tests on a #Linux machine over the weekend and see what happens but thought I'd shout out to the void in case somebody knows something.
Also, no I'm not reaching out on Discord or IRC. If you can't be bothered to put up an email address then I can't be bothered to create another account just for one thing.

Doom is a hell of an enjoyable game imo. Nice music, awesome level design, where you have to climb or descent, but you don't need pixel perfect jumps, gunplay is tight, and so far I enjoy every weapon (minus pistol, because). Enemies have variety, and I have to say Glory Kills are awesome. It is different if you jump on somebody, or doing it from below, etc.
I could press out the magical 60 fps from the game, and now it is infinitely better. I may look up a guide for tweaks. Luckily the game is really well optimized by iD.

I bought Doom 2016, it works relatively well on my crappy i5 and gt1030. And I feel like a kid again, collecting colored keycards and shooting the monsters of hell...

So can anyone from the Windows Gaming on Linux crowd can answer this:
How the hell something works on X distro why it doesn't work on Y? I did the same thing, installed through Lutris, and installed the dependencies before. Yet both Heroes of the Storm and Magic Arena works perfectly on Ubuntu MATE, and didn't work on Manjaro Linux. I played these games on Manjaro before, but due to various things I had to reinstall it (distrohopping mainly), but I always made sure to do the same thing.
Also: do you think a Steam Proton only game doesn't need the same support as a native Linux game? Why would it be easier? What makes you think that a Proton supported game doesn't drop that support in the future, simple because of how Wine/Proton/whatever development goes?
In fact it happened before with a major title, called iRacing. Yes it's a niche game, but it is the biggest racing title in the past 10 years! It had an official Wine support, until they had problem with it, I think 2 years ago? I even played it about 5 years ago, just to see how it plays on my machine (it was great!).

@LibertyPaulM Steam said that if one buys a Windows game and IIRC after two weeks statistics show that the customer only played the game using Proton it will count as a purchase for Linux. I wonder if there's an algorithm that turns old Windows purchases into Linux ones if the playing time on Linux surpases the one on Windows.
