Gestern schaute ich nach sehr vielen Jahren mal wieder "Cats".
Ich finde ja schön, dass das Musical auf die Briefe von T.S. Eliot an seine Enkelkinder aufbaut, in denen er die unterschiedliche Charaktere von verschiedenen Katzen beschreibt.
Ein paar Lieder gefallen mir schon sehr gut, aber insgesamt finde ich etwas zu "kätzisch" (zu viel "Miaaauuu").
Heute schaue ich "Starlight Express".
Dass die Darsteller:innen durchs Publikum heizen, finde ich schon irgendwie cool, aber inhaltlich und musikalisch spricht es mich so gar nicht an.

Over the last day or so, more creaky ol' memories of lyrics for Starlight Express have been popping to mind. I'm desperately trying to remember if they were in the modern production or got cut. Stop self-gaslighting me, brain!
I had a listen to some of the released tracks from the Cast Album on Youtube and, honestly, they sounded better come to life on stage with the full dancing and skating routines than they do in a sterile recording booth.
Maybe I should purchase the live performace and watch it back.Mind you some of the new songs are pretty catchy too, and they're taking up residence rent-free.

Such an apt line for many things in the world at present. -
CW: The new production of Starlight Express is glorious fun (long, now with pic)
So I went to see the new production of Starlight Express this evening.
I saw the original when I was little and loved it. Knew all the songs off by heart and it was one of the reasons I got big into quad skating then rollerblading and ice skating. Hadn't seen or heard it in decades, and had avoided the marketing for the new version so I was going in free from expectations.
Well, you know, except for hoping it would be epically awesome with flamboyant costumes and that they'd keep at least some of the original songs.
I wasn't disappointed. It was indeed very epically awesome and the costumes were most flamboyant. Many of the songs stayed true to the original, and many others were revamped sometimes switching genres. There were new songs entirely as well, freshening things up a bit. It wasn't just an 80s do-over. Some of the more minor background carriages were given more to do, and there were even a couple of new ones. The story is largely the same with some tweaks to the plot (such as it is) and the characters. I have a suspicion the changes will have annoyed all of the right people (racists, sexists, queerphobes and oil execs).
I was lucky enough to be literal front row, with the "track" going all around. I swear I had the best seat in the house! Hopefully my singing along wasn't too distracting (and I did shut up during the quieter moments).
If you liked the original, you'll like this version (unless you don't like any form of change). If you never saw the original, you'll probably still reallly enjoy it (unless you hate fun).
Wouldn't mind seeing it again in the future some time. Hopefully it has a nice long run - the auditorium seemed packed which is a good sign.

I’ve been a *huge* fan of #StarlightExpress since I first saw it in the 1980’s. I’ve seen every evolution of it multiple times (including in Bochum, Germany - tho that one only once).
Today I was back, because it is back. I cried through most of the first act. It is fantastic.

Fazit der #Kirmes: Ein Auf und Ab. Sowohl in den Fahrgeschäften als auch emotional :blobcatnotlike:
Ich bin froh, wieder zuhause zu sein. Die erste Bahn knapp verpasst, die nächste (eigentlich 30 Minuten später) hatte Verspätung - aber immerhin kam ich noch rein - und fuhr dann auch nicht bis zum Ziel. Immerhin kam die nächste an der Endstation dank der immer größer gewordenen Verspätung bereits zwei Minuten später.
Und ich sah auf der Rückfahrt in der Bahn noch zwei weitere Personen mit FFP2-Masken (wenn auch "nur" die Filtertüten-Variante) :ablobcatbouncefast:
Ich war als erstes auf der #Walzerfahrt. Ein schönes, altes, teils hölzernes Fahrgeschäft - das muss unterstützt werden! Und es war ein schöner Einstieg für mich in den Kirmesrundgang.
Kurz dahinter stand dann der flottere #MusikExpress, wo ich mir dann eine Rückwärtsfahrt gegönnt hab. Hui, gabs dann zum Ende hin bei den Temporunden viel Airtime! 😃
Beim weiteren Rundgang kam ich dann am #Playball vorbei. Das ist quasi eine modernere, größere und flottere Version der "Walzerfahrt". Zu dieser Art Fahrgeschäft (auch bekannt als "Flipper") hatte ich aus einem YouTube-Video behalten, dass das schon eher eine Herausforderung ist und nicht jeder Person gut bekommt. Daher hab ich das mal ausgelassen.
Dann stand ich vorm #BreakDance und überlegte, ob ich mir das trotz der knalligen Sonne antun soll, so ohne Überdachung. Ich würde das ja eigentlich schon gerne endlich mal fahren wollen. Bis dann eine Nachricht reinkam (dazu später separat mehr), die meine Stimmung sehr schnell nach unten beförderte.
So hab ich mich dann gegen den Breakdance entschieden und landete dann doch wieder beim Frustfressen :blobcatgoogly: Ich hab mir an einem Stand #Churros mit Zimt und Zucker gekauft, auch wenn das womöglich in Palmöl gebadet wurde, wenn ich die Antwort richtig verstanden hatte, als ich anfangs daran vorbei gekommen bin.
Sehr witzig fand ich, dass die zwei hinter beide nur "Eine Portion" bzw. "Einmal Churros, bitte" gesagt haben, aber erst auf Nachfrage, was sie draufhaben möchten. An einem Stand, der nur Churros anbietet, ist es klar, dass eine kaufwillige Person wohl Churros kaufen möchte 😉
Als ich dann kurz vor Schluss meiner Runde an der Live-Bühne vorbeikam, wurde ausnahmsweise mal nicht Schlager gesungen, sondern ein Musical-Lied von #StarlightExpress. Gänsehaut! :blobcataww:

In Bochum sind wir ja stolz auf das am längsten an einem Ort laufende Musical, aber zunehmend habe ich das Gefühl, dass #StarlightExpress zu einer unguten Parabel für die deutsche #Energiewende wird: Da kommt die arrogante, CO₂-neutral betriebene Elektra („Die Zukunft bin ich“ 🙄) und will der treuen Dampflok Rusty ihren Arbeitsplatz wegnehmen, die dann zum Glück beweist, dass Kohle noch lange nicht zum alten Eisen gehört …
