  1. NOTE: This is a repost from the Fediverse-City Matrix Room.

I meant to post on the progress that @toddsundsted has been making on kristec.

You can also checkout this ambitious project itself at:

    https://github.com/toddsundsted/ktistec

I've been thoroughly impressed with all of the publishing features of his Fediverse server.

Some of the shortcomings, if that's how you choose to view them, might be that it's essentially a smolweb server leveraging noSQL and an accounts database that trusts all users as literal admins.

But if you're looking to self-host, and your primary interest is in publishing your own material on the #Fediverse, then this may be just the thing you've been looking for.

I cannot atest to the veracity of his claims because I haven't actually installed or tested its capabilities, but it's indeed a laundry list of features I've been hoping to see - leaving that Twitter style cloning of communications in the past, like I've been hoping for.

So for those interested, if you're impressed with the capabilities that #PieFed and #Mitra and #Socialhome bring to the table then here's a fourth initiative that is both visionary and inciteful in it's ambitions.

    Your thoughts, observations?

  6. #writerscoffeeclub Oct 16. How much does your working vocabulary change between works?

I'm not sure. Terminology changes between #Steampunk and mainstream #SciFi. But a lot of it is easily transferable between works of what basically fall under one genre. And, in #Riders_of_the_Dream it is a mix. We have #Star_Trek, #Babylon_5, #Firefly, #20,000_League, even a bit of #Moby_Dick. Quite a mish-mash.

I love perusing the various stats, and this particular one left me with that pain in your side from serious gufaw gufaw's, ... Sulu outranks Eugen - now THAT, is fricken' funny! And he's also organically ranked above @gargron too, lolz.

Now, the sad part about this, and one would need to have been a Fedizen going back for a few years, is that as a techno early adopter, #Wesley_Crusher was summarily and relentlessly flogged and ridiculed until he was driven from the Fediverse by selfish, jealous little children here in the Fedi about 5 years ago.

I mean, sure, Wesley Crusher was a total goombah on #TNG, while #George_Takei is a superhero from #ToS, yet in real life, #Will_Wheaton was among the first generation of (albeit, minor) celebrities to embrace #DeSoc and the #Fediverse, and our local stable of miscreants (every social network has them) hounded, maliciously trolled, and harassed him until the only conclusion that could be arrived at was that the Fediverse is a hostile environment not worthy of belonging to.

That really angered me, but at least everybody loves #Sulu :)

  15. Questions always follow after such, 'salty talk', or 'nautical nomenclature', or in #Star_Trek terms, #technobabble.

What's the difference between a mizzen topgallant sail and a main royal staysail? Just a few rules is all it takes, but in today's world, one need only avail themselves of the basic Marconi rig on a single masted sloop. There's a mainsail (the big triangular one aft of the mast), and a jib, or foresail. Typically, when speaking about a jib (the one forward of the mast), people will typically categorize them into about three classes:

    • a #Genoa (big one - low wind conditions)
    • a #Jenny (also called a #working_jib for most wind conditions)
    • a #Storm_jib - smallish, for reduced sail area in high and gale force winds.

If you're rigged to run one jib, you're a #sloop; two, and you're #cutter rigged.

tl;dr: Unlike elections, rigging is a good thing. Without standing rigging you have nothing to hold your masts up in place and they'll just snap or fall over. Without running rigging you have no way to control your sails, hoist them up, or catch the wind.

So when it comes to sailboats, it's a very good thing that they're rigged :p
