  1. What does the death of a jailed Jesuit priest say about India's democracy under Modi?

Stan Swamy had recently published a study of 3,000 people jailed for being members of banned Maoist groups. He found that 97% of them had no such affiliation and that many of their trials were held without lawyers, in a language they didn't understand. He'd filed a case on their behalf in the state court of Jharkhand, where he lived. All of this had embarrassed the government, he said.

  6. While A Journalist Spends Time in Jail For Doing His Duty, An Old, Ailing Man Even Unable To Even Sip Water & Dies Behind Bars, What happened to Article 21? Justice Rekha Sharma

During the seminar hosted today by Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Reforms (CJAR) at ISIL, Delhi, former Delhi High Court Judge Rekha Sharma lamented that the Supreme Court has lost its credibility in the eyes of the public. She further expressed concerns that while powerful people are getting bail "on experimental basis", commoners are "withering away unwept, unheard and unsung".

  7. The Elgar Parishad 16 Must Not Be Forgotten

The case represents what the government can do to well-meaning people who speak up against atrocities, and who stand up for the weak and dispossessed. For this reason alone, they are seen as enemies of the state and kept in prison for as long as the government can manage, writes Aakar Patel.

  8. On the road to 2047, the state of our democracy cannot be a distant concern

Even as our society and nation lurch towards a future in which even the rudimentary semblances of democracy and decency are defied, we are increasingly witness to a shrinking support base of persons who can struggle and assert the need for these indispensable norms.

  11. Pre-trial incarceration for years, on flimsy evidence not put to test when repeatedly denying bail,
that too when a person is sick/elderly is so, so wrong. Any State that relies on draconian #uapa to deny fair trial or jail indefinitely, uses police to file charge that it cannot prove - cannot be a democracy. Shame, shame #india
