  2. And for the computer science folks, my St Andrews CS PhD which I had to drop out of in 1996 due to my progressive neurological disease (still not then diagnosed properly) was about creating a system to support hypercode, a hypertext like programming system built on underlying persistence technology. #ComputerScience #Academia #StAndrewsUniversity #Programming

  4. Important new report published today from the University of St Andrews: "The University of St Andrews and the Legacies of Empire, 1700-1900" - looks like a really thorough and well researched piece of vital work. Thanks to the researchers. zenodo.org/records/14975043 #slavery #slaveTrade #blackHistory #History #ScottishHistory #colonialism #StAndrewsUniversity #StAndrews #Fife #Scotland

  6. Just realised I'm as old (at least to the year of release!) as the C programming language. So many memories of programming in it as an undergraduate at St Andrews. Kernighan and Ritchie was our programming bible. computerhistory.org/timeline/1 #ComputerHistory #ComputingHistory #1970s #StAndrews #StAndrewsUniversity #programming #coding #Kernighan #BrianKernighan #Ritchie #DennisRitchie #KernighanAndRitchie #Books #Cprogramming

  7. Just realised my husband and I - plus pal Andrew - graduated 30 years ago today at St Andrews University! We hope to get video clips soon, but the uni haven't got them to us yet. Here's the Dundee Courier page from that day, 6 July 1994. 8. Tracking a parcel delivery: “We’ll be with you in approximately 1 hours 45 minutes”. That #coding wouldn’t have been up to scratch in 1st year #ComputerScience at #StAndrews in 1990/1, learning S-Algol. #StAndrewsUniversity #Programming #SAlgol #Algol

  9. So grateful to have been able to tune in live online for one panel of this year's #StAndrews Book #Conference #USTC23. Enjoyed three speakers talking about women publishers and stationers in early modern #France and #England #bookHistory. Sadly that's the only panel I'll be able to see with my #neuro illness so bad this year. But so grateful to have been able to watch. Huge thanks to the organisers for making it accessible to me. #streaming #accessibility #academia #StAndrewsUniversity

  10. @vivdunstan
Much though I like Edinburgh I would think it far better to go and visit the distilleries and sample the product in the area it was produced. Get a driver (or non-drinking friend) and plot a route. Stay and eat locally. There's a host of good hotels and restaurants throughout Scotland. I have to believe that this is what Iain Banks would have wanted you to do.
It may even end up costing you less than Rocco Forte charges you to listen to the trains and traffic.
When I visited St. Andrews Computer Science they were working from a Honeywell Mainframe and programming in Algol. At least Edinburgh had punch card readers.

  11. The drawback of reading Iain Banks’s “Raw Spirit” whisky tour book is I now have a very long list of whiskies I want to try! If we ever get back to the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh I will have to spend a long time - and a lot of money! - in their dedicated whisky bar. It is also marvellous reading more re whisky names I recognise from the computers at #StAndrews Computer Science back in the 1990s 🙂 #Scotch #whisky #Scotland #IainBanks #BalmoralHotel #StAndrewsUniversity #ComputerScience #Scotland

  12. My last post about reading a Brian Kernighan book reminds me of my undergrad computer science days in the early 1990s, when his C textbook was absolutely essential. We had an enormous problem in my year with C lecturing at St Andrews which caused a student rebellion and a huge plunge in class sizes in later years. But all of us there relied avidly on Kernighan and Ritchie's book as our bible.

  13. Having a rather meta seminar experience this afternoon, watching a seminar on student note taking in 17th century mathematics lectures at St Andrews. Watched online with an audience in a mathematics lecture theatre at St Andrews where I had maths lectures in 1990 and 1991. I think one or two of my old lecturers are there.
