Pierre de Fécondité (Camlez): A 1.5m tall stele near Chapelle Saint Nicolas, Bretagne. Traditionally women would rub their belly against the stone in the hope of becoming pregnant, and it could reputedly cure young children with disabilities. #StandingStoneSunday #Bretagne #stele #IronAge #fertility #standingstone #Brittany #France 📷 peulven More: http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=62940

Something a bit different - using 3D Gaussian Splats for creating art.
This started out as a Pictish standing stone up around Loch Kinord, Aberdeenshire. I took a video walking around it. Made a Gaussian Splat at some length. Found an interesting view where the splat artefacts look like a view through the surrounding tree foliage. Finished the tone processing in Luminar Neo.

The Gogar Stone at Easter Norton Farm, just outside the west of Edinburgh. Hidden from view beyond the stone in the first image lies Edinburgh airport.
The stone is quite small, probably no more than about 3 feet high and about 18" across at its widest point.

I didn't know #StandingStoneSunday was a thing, but since it's Sunday and I saw some standing stones today, it's perfect timing !
I was walking up to Leith Hill (Surrey, UK) when I saw a field with (at least) 3 large standing stones. The field was private so I couldn't walk up to the stones themselves.
I have no idea when these stones date from - if anyone has any ideas, let me know I'm curious !

Can anyone recommend a stone circle, barrow or standing stone to visit, with kids, between #Edinburgh , #Glasgow and the #LochNess area in #Scotland ?

The Duirinish Stone was NOT erected thousands of years ago. Set in a concrete base, it stands approximately 5m high and was erected by hand. That is to say it was pulled up the hill and set in place by human power. See the ALT for more information…
A view from the ’Two Churches Walk.near Dunvegan. Healaval Mhor* is the flat topped hill in the distance.

A little bit of a mystery for #StandingStoneSunday
We had a sunny visit to see John Bell's Stone in the grounds of Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire today. A tall standing stone said to be erected as a memorial in 1617. But is that just when the top was added to a prehistoric standing stone? Balgorkar stone circle is just 650m away and this stone really would not be out of place as a flanker there.

Morning folks, to celebrate losing an hour of my #StandingStoneSunday, here's Standard Street or Great Oak Road standing stone, near the lovely town of Crickhowell in South Wales. Standing over 6 feet tall, it's marked by the OS as a boundary stone but must surely be Bronze Age.
This visit April 2012.

Revisiting the memorial stone of the ‘last woman burned as a witch’ in Scotland in film and archival photos. South Wales, in the shadow of Bannau Brycheiniog, for today's #StandingStoneSunday
The Growing Stone, at Cwrt y Gollen (a former military base) between Crickhowell and Abergavenny. The stone is a red sandstone monolith around 12 feet tall, one of the most impressive menhirs in South Wales.

Another Tal y Fan standing stone for today's #StandingStoneSunday - Maen Penddu, situated over 400m above sea level, high above the Conwy valley. There's a stone circle of very small stones (Cefn Maen Amor) nearby.

The fine Cae Coch standing stone above the beautiful Conwy valley for today's #StandingStoneSunday.
The stone is a thin slab, but broad and tapering on the side that faces the valley. It's one of several stones on this part of the Tal y Fan slopes, likely marking the route to the wondrous Maen y Bardd chambered tomb. Here the view is to Pen y Gaer hillfort on the centre skyline, with the rocky ridge of Pen y Castell on the right.
This visit July 2011.

5000 years ago, the Neolithic people of Dartmoor cut this 27 feet high standing stone from granite where The Oxenham Arms is now located.
The pub was built around it when it was a monastery around 800 years ago, the stone goes down into the cellar & up into the room above.

Gogledd Cymru and the wonderful megaliths around Tal y Fan for today's #StandingStoneSunday. Maen Crwn is a solitary standing stone and the first encountered if visiting these sites from Penmaenmawr.
It's a large, rounded boulder of a stone, which has the feel of an on-the-way to somewhere marker, guiding the visitor upwards to the megalithic complex above.
This visit in glorious weather, July 2011.

Porthmeor standing stone in West Penwith for today's ##StandingStoneSunday offering. It stands in a field on the north side of the spectacular coast road between Morvah and Zennor. Just to the south is a late Iron Age courtyard house settlement, and the field patterns here are mostly Bronze and Iron Age, still in use today.

Here's a shot forgotten about from Friday night, despite it being the one my husband was originally after.
The #cresentmoon over the #Longstone on the #IsleofWight.
He was hoping for, but not expecting the amazing display from the Aurora Borealis which appeared later during this shoot. You can see the sky just beginning to show the pinks and greens of the Northern Lights as they emerged when the sky got dark, and pink reflections on the stone! This was around 10pm. #StandingStone #Photography -
