Good news! The Windows app for #StandardNotes supports resizing columns in spreadsheet-type notes, and those resized columns are readable when I open the note on the Android app.
This unblocks me for using Standard Notes as my RSU tax calculator. Neat!
-
I’m guessing that the spreadsheets in #ProtonDrive are powered by the same code as the spreadsheets in #StandardNotes, so I’m concerned that the columns won’t change width to fit the content when using Proton, either. That would be a bummer. I wish I had the front-end chops to contribute an improvement.

I’m having a good experience transferring my notes into #StandardNotes (“Productivity” price tier). A little overwhelmed by the enormity of the task, but focused on the sensitive content I don’t want AI scraping.
Good: encrypted; cross-platform (using web, iOS, Android so far); syncs quickly; formatting pastes in well (paid feature).
Not good: spreadsheet note type can’t adjust columns, even to auto-fit the content, and spreadsheet doesn’t display in Safari browser at all.

#Infomaniak Mail (Gmail), #LibreOffice (Microsoft Office), #Jitsi (Meet/Teams), #Bitwarden (password manager), #StandardNotes (Keep).

#StandardNotes just did a weirds. It spun a little when loading a note, then refreshed the note without any content, and then synced the blank note overwriting itself.
So that note’s just gone now. 🤷♂️ I had it backed up elsewhere so it’s not gone gone but that’s never happened before and it’s a little concerning.
May have been because the note was a larger one and the machine I was using to view it was older/slower. Bad combo.

Time for #HiveMind : I have been using #StandardNotes for years and feel it is time to check out some alternatives to see whether I should go on paying for it. I don't mind paying, just want to make sure I am paying for the tool that works best for me (and Standard Notes feels expensive). Suggestions for #e2ee #Notetaking apps which might be better, please.

Great interview with Mo Bitar, creator of @standardnotes, by Vishnu from @ente !
I liked Mo's comments about building privacy into a 'regular' app, rather than focusing on hardcore privacy first.

Diving a little deeper into #StandardNotes and #MicroBlog to see if they are suitable for my purposes 🙂
One thing I keep coming across is that everything is requiring an account, often payment. This is not limited to those two examples but systemic.
Why can we not create solutions or services that are private by design and distributed through volunteers?
If everybody gives a tiny bit, we can achieve great things together!

Standard Notes are removing support for custom domains from their blogging platform Listed. Since they anyway have failed to keep the service running reliably, I wonder why they don’t just discontinue it.

With a heavy heart I'm cancelling one of my last US-based services @standardnotes and replace it with @monocles #nextcloud solution (crypto via gocryptfs).
I'm not willing to let any Dollar from my spendings go as tax money to a regime that disrespects basic human rights like the one in the USA.Dear #standardnotes team, I hope you make it through this regime and then we will find together again. Your service and support was always flawless! 🫶

I downloaded the Standard Notes AppImage and created an App Drawer menu item, I used the Occultist from Darkest Dungeon as the icon image.
It runs quite nicely, notes can be saved locally with the free version (I opted to go without an account). Premium features are locked to the paid tiers, which are yearly and a bit too pricey for my needs.
I'm happy Standard Notes makes an effort to support Linux, using an AppImage which is truly portable and runs on just about any distro.

Finally I consolidated my notes taking system in two different private apps:
#Logseq for professional and project management, the journal makes easy to take notes during meetings and link to projects and people. The queries are so powerful and helps with status report and followup with the stakeholders.
The second is #StandardNotes mostly for personal use and topics that I have time to think about how to organise into categories or tags. It's a great app!

@tripplehelix Out of curiosity from #standardnotes user to a former user: why? ;-)

Going through the #Anytype to #Capacities PKM data migration has been incredibly painful (as in one by one import copy-paste). I am thinking about dropping the idea of migrating and instead start from scratch, or only the minimum data set…. That’s what I had to do when I migrated off #StandardNotes @capacities

Question: What are your thoughts about Standard Notes?
Been thinking of giving it a try because I'm looking for something simple and with good cross platform support. I've been using OneNote but find it to be overkill. Obsidian is also fussy, and Joplin doesn't like iOS.
What is giving me pause is primarily subscription fatigue. Is it really worth the cost? Is it any better than using Simple Note (beyond privacy concerns).

So...who uses what for the notes storage? I've used #SimpleNotes for a very long time, but few years ago I've switched to #Joplin, while it has all the features I need, its performance, look and flow is not what I expect. I'd like to use #Obsidian, but the licensing is a complete mess. Since the acquisition, #StandardNotes still not available for Proton users, so no go for now (or ever?)
-
Just checked and yep, it's the same. #StandardNotes, which has recently been acquired by #Proton, doesn't even give you rich text in the notes without paying at least $90/year. Even #Simplenote allows markup, as does #Obsidian. Nothing to see here, move along. https://standardnotes.com/plans

Testing out encrypted Standard Notes as I don't trust Automattic to not be using (or about to use) my years of Simplenote content for AI training...

@sen I do it with #standardnotes from time to time, but I don't really care about the visualizing because it will be done on the computer.

I'm on the eternal/impossible quest to find the perfect #notetaking app. I've tried them all and always end up disappointed. #SimpleNotes, #StandardNotes, #AppleNotes, #Notesnook, #Obsidian, #Anytype, etc. I'm tired of compromising.
I need something where I can just shove all my markdown or plaintext #notes (and corresponding images) into one folder and have an #opensource cross-platform (including #Docker) editing interface that can sync via #Nextcloud or #WebDAV or whatever. Where is this app??! Does it even exist?
The closest solution was Notational Velocity over a decade ago, but even that wasn't cross-platform.
Halp 😔

@protonprivacy @standardnotes @obsidian
Thank you. I would consider switching from #ObsidianMD to #StandardNotes for reasons of #privacy and #DataSecurity, and because Standard Notes and Proton software is #OpenSource. Proton being hosted in Switzerland, in Europe, helps too, although I don't know what that means for Standard Notes, whose servers are currently in the U.S.
However, I was hoping to learn about the cost of switching.

What makes Standard Notes a great Obsidian alternative End-To-End Encrypted Notes App | Standard Notes
https://standardnotes.com/compare/obsidian-alternative@standardnotes may have a leg up over @obsidian in data security, and its takeover by @protonprivacy attests to that.
Unfortunately, this comparison page does little in the way of convincing me that Standard Notes can match Obsidian's features and usability...
