Sad to see this Stop and Shop closing. Fortunately its site is adjacent to another major grocery store, meaning no food desert will be created.
Simultaneously, disappointed so see that some of Stamford's Board of Reps (somehow) using the closing as an opportunity to peddle anti-housing narratives.

When we have a severe housing crisis on our hands, and a dwindling opportunity for home ownership, the fact that these quibbles can kill projects is maddening.

Stamford's zoning laws have explicitly prioritized conserving "the value of property" over the city's actual housing needs for decades. Now, the city's Zoning Board is planning to revise this language, and stress the importance of the city's affordability and environmental needs. This would be an good, albeit symbolic, step in the right direction. Looks like the city's Republican-led NIMBY group is already trying to stop it though...

In Stamford, housing code enforcement lacks teeth. The city's regulators are dramatically underfunded and understaffed. The result? Buildings without heat and hot water, and unsanitary conditions. Tenants don't have access to vital information, and need to advocate for themselves in a daunting, complex, and time consuming legal system. This needs to change. Solidarity to the tenants, housing unions, and activists speaking up!

A piece showing the cost of living for Stamford, New Haven, and Hartford compared to national averages. Two things stand out to me: all three places have utilities costs significantly above the national average, and Stamford has a housing cost wayyyyyyy above the national average.
Actually regulating Eversource and actually taking on our housing crisis will go a long way to making Connecticut more livable.
