  1. I am elated to share the news that during 3 rounds of competition, my 13 plant entries won 29 ribbons at the 2023 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show: one 1st Prize; seven 2nd Prize; five 3rd Prize; twelve Honorable Mentions; four Class Commendations. The annual gardening event ran March 4-12.

The plant shown here is my PLATYCERIUM BIFURCATUM 'NETHERLANDS' (common name "Elkhorn Fern"), a plant I purchased years ago as a baby with just a few green leaves and no basal fronds. I will never get over the thrill of entering the Convention Center and spotting this blue ribbon from across the room.

  6. Platycerium elephantotis is a brand new plant for me. I have had this one about 3 months. The new growth always looks lighter and a bit fuzzy, which always makes me panic as I think it may be mildew! So far, so good. The moss looks like it may be coming back to life. #houseplants #houseplantsofmastodon #ferns #staghornfern

  10. Basal frond of a Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum). In these ferns, the basal leaves press closely to the trunks of trees to help anchor the plant. They also collect falling leaf litter, which helps fertilise it.

This is one of my numerous alligator purchases: it looked so smol and cute when I bought it, but now it is a terrifying Krynoid that will soon need its own flat.

  15. Most of my outdoor ferns are starting to die back for winter, but indoors, this Staghorn Fern brings me joy.

Some recent work suggests that these ferns may be on the cusp of eusociality. They grow on tree with overlapping generations of adult plants in a colony. Some plants specialise in leaf-litter collection and reproduction, and some in water-storage. Not quite an ant or a mole rat, but getting there... doi.org/10.1002/ecy.3373 #ferns #FernFriday #Platycerium #StaghornFern
