  1. So, I don't know if I've talked about Monthly Movie Night on here before.

Way back in 2014 my wife and I had an idea to watch all the Best Picture Academy Award winning movies, in order, from 1927's "Wings" up to the present-day. We would watch one per month, which , if everything went smoothly, would have us catching up the the present day after a few years.

The family got word of the idea and liked it, so we invited them all to come over. We have a big family, and they're almost all locals. So every month we've been hosting about 15-20 people, to watch a classic movie.

We do themed food. (for instance, this month is a western, so we're having chili)

We have a popcorn machine. (a real, full-sized one)

We do movie trivia (with the night's winner, second, and third place receiving the movie candy boxes of their choice, respectively. The cumulative trivia winner for the year gets to pick the New Year's Eve movie. (Yes, we do Movie Night on New Year's Eve every year)

Before the movie, we run a cartoon that matches the theme of the movie. And then we run a trailer for the next month's movie. And then... roll film!

After the movie, we go out and sit around the fire pit, listen to music, and chat until midnight-ish.

Well, 12 years later, we're still going strong.

We've celebrated announcing our first pregnancy at movie night. We celebrated announcing our 2nd kid at movie night. Our youngest is now 7, and our oldest is now 11. To them, a monthly movie night is just a given - "doesn't everyone do a movie night?"

The audience has also grown older. My wife's grandma has come to almost every movie night, and she's now 97 years young and still going strong. She's a hoot. She can't remember anything you just said to her just a minute ago, but she can recount some of the craziest stories from her past. Stories about each of the aunts and uncles that come to movie night, and who are now also in their late 60's/70's.

The goal of watching all the Oscar winners stayed as true as we could make it.

For some movies, they were just not great for a mixed audience, so we skipped those and went with the biggest Blockbuster of that year. When both were no-go's, we picked another fun one from that year.

For Halloween, we always pick a classic. This year we're going with Edwards Scissorhands (even though that's obviously a Christmas movie)

But my kids really want to see it, and they think it's creepy and should be a halloween movie... anyway...

Inevitably, the Oscar winners became too heavy (our last Oscar movie was The Artist, which was fitting, as we both started this journey with a silent film and ended it with a silent film.) so we now have a "fishbowl".

The "fishbowl" contains slips of paper, upon which guests have written either their favorite movie, or a movie they think everyone would enjoy together and might not have seen before.

Tonight, we're watching Stagecoach (1939) - John Wayne's first big hit.

    I just love the poster.

Anyway, that's Movie Night. A right-honourable tradition that I hope never ends.

  7. #Stagecoach is seeking public feedback on proposed changes to bus services 71, 72, 72A and 87 in #Newcastle, aimed at improving reliability and introducing new electric buses with air conditioning, #USB charging and audio-visual announcements.

The proposals include a limited-stop section on Barrack Road between Blackett Street and Cowgate to reduce journey times, with passengers able to use the more frequent 62 and 63 services. Two city-centre routing options are also being considered to help reduce delays.

Under the plans, hourly evening and Sunday services 72 and 87 would replace the current hourly 71 and 72, while maintaining links between Newbiggin Hall and Westerhope. The once-daily 72A service would be withdrawn, with its route covered by service 72 via Cowgate.

Consultation events will take place at Westerhope Community Centre on 18 June and Newcastle City Library on 22 June.

  8. #Stagecoach is supporting Better #Transport Week (15–21 June), organised by Campaign for Better Transport, which this year focuses on how transport connects people and places. The bus and coach operator says the campaign reflects its commitment to providing accessible, sustainable and affordable travel options.

To mark the week, Stagecoach is sharing three customer stories that highlight the role #buses can play in everyday life. One passenger described how affordable travel helped them get to college and later travel across north-east Scotland. Another said reliable services and supportive drivers made settling into a new town easier. A third passenger recounted how helping a visually impaired traveller on a bus led to a lasting friendship.

Stagecoach says buses offer a cost-effective alternative to car travel while also supporting local communities and social connections.

  9. 🐝 #Stagecoach marked 125 years of Queens Road Bus Garage in #Manchester with an open day attended by around 2,000 visitors, in partnership with the Museum of #Transport. The site opened on 6 June 1901 as Manchester’s first electric tram depot and remains in continuous use, now operating within Greater Manchester’s Bee Network franchise.

The event featured guided tours of the working garage, which now houses 153 vehicles and 504 staff, plus shuttle services linking central Manchester and Heaton Park Tramway. Exhibits traced the evolution of local transport, with historic buses from the Museum of Transport displayed alongside modern Stagecoach Bee Network vehicles.

A highlight was an Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC repainted in authentic SELNEC Central livery (1969–74), reflecting regional transport heritage. Stagecoach said the celebration reflected community pride and the depot’s ongoing role in keeping Greater Manchester moving.

  10. Watching the Stagecoach performance of Counting Crows, one of my All Time Top 5 Favorites, on YouTube. Mr. Jones comes on and I'm thinking that rocking to this now is like rocking to something that came out in 1963 the year this song came out and no shade to great music from the 60s, I'm not liking the math of that.
