  3. Lots of my preamps were used on yesterday's session. Here's a few hard at work.

  4. Calibrated the high-pass filter knee, and levels, and two more SSL 9000 preamps are in service. Sorry about the monitor artifacts in the picture.

  5. Numbers 5 and 6 are now calibrated and in the rack.

  6. Unit number 6 powered up mostly successfully. No magic smoke but when you turned the gain knob you got all sorts of nasty clicks and pops. I recognized that as an issue with the dual transistor, in this case an AS394 (LM394 equivalent). I replaced it and we're good to go. The AS394 is the big transister near a cluster of WIMA caps. I'll add a closeup.

    This as another reminder I need to get a proper de-soldering gun.

  9. So I've never showed a more detailed look at the meter board assembly on these mic pre's. It has some of the smallest solder pads you will ever solder to. I have a 1/4'" piece of plastic to use as a bending jig, then you insert and carefully solder the LEDs. The board itself is mounted above the main PCB supported on all 4 corners. I use some fairly small solid thermostat wire with an extra tube over it to support it. Those wires also provide power and signal to the board.

  11. @vertigo They're nice. I use those on my #SSL9KBuild mic preamp builds. But I kinda like the monochromatic look. The rest of the system is monochromatic.

  14. Finally finished the 2nd SSL 9000 preamp. It was actually basically done 2 weeks ago, but I managed to do something really fekkin stupid and blew up some of the semis on the damn thing, and had to replace them. Thankfully it was only a few dollars.

  15. The 2nd SSL preamp board which has been on backorder for 3 months finally arrived today, so I can warm up the soldering iron!!
