Social Security to shutter National Hearing Centers since the vast majority of these appeals hearings now take place fully virtually through modern-day videoconference platforms.
Also, #SSA is spending more to recover low-dollar overpayments than it is recovering, on average 20% more, some as much as 50%.
They spent $4.6 million to recover $2.6 million for low amount overpayments from 16000 claimants, which often is caused by SSA's payment calculation error and no fault of claimants.
In 2007, SSA opened National Hearing Centers to have administrative law judges hear more appeals from individuals whose initial retirement or disability claim was rejected. Individuals would show up at their local hearing office to have their appeals heard, but the case would be heard on video by an administrative law judge located in one of these National Hearing Centers.

Social Security Customer Service Worker Charged in Disability Funds Theft Scheme.
The worker targeted claimants diagnosed with mental health disorders and altered claimant records in the SSA database to include bank accounts he controlled and his residential mailing address so he could receive their benefit funds, stealing $116,537.62. The worker also adjusted the date of benefit eligibility and generated large backpay benefits.
The worker faces up to 20 years in prison for wire fraud, up to 20 years for mail fraud, up to 10 years for theft of government property, up to five years for false statements, and a mandatory two years for aggravated identity theft. #SSA .

Updated 12:59 PM EDT, March 19, 2025WASHINGTON (AP) — "Dozens of Social Security Administration [#SSA] offices across the country are slated to close this year due to actions taken by #ElonMusk’s Department of Government Efficiency as part of the #Trump administration’s unprecedented effort to shrink the size of government.
"#DOGE has published a list of nearly 800 federal real estate leases that it is seeking to cancel. The Associated Press has obtained an internal planning document from the General Services Administration, which manages federal real estate, which shows when nearly two-thirds of those cancellations are expected to go into effect.
"The offices are closing despite a new requirement that tighter identity-proofing measures be put in place to prevent fraud and abuse. These steps will require millions of recipients and applicants to visit agency field offices rather than interact with agency employees over the phone.
"The AP also obtained more information about each lease on DOGE’s list through other publicly available datasets, including their addresses, the dates the leases had started and were originally expected to expire, and the landlords who own the properties."

"Donald Trump’s interim Social Security chief suggested Thursday night he will effectively turn off the agency that manages the essential safety net program for seniors and the disabled, if Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) can’t access the non-anonymized sensitive personal information and data of hundreds of millions of Americans, based on a judge’s order.
"'My anti-fraud team would be DOGE affiliates. My IT staff would be DOGE affiliates,' said #LeeDudek, acting Social Security Administration (#SSA) commissioner, arguing the order was too broad, according to Bloomberg News. 'As it stands, I will follow it exactly and terminate access by all SSA employees to our IT systems,' he said, adding: 'Really, I want to turn it off and let the courts figure out how they want to run a federal agency.'
"Dudek’s threat to block SSA employees from using the agency’s IT systems — a move that could halt #SocialSecurityPayments — came in response to a judge’s temporary restraining order in a case brought by the #AFLCIO #LaborUnion. The order bars Social Security Administration officials from allowing DOGE, including Musk, and the SSA’s DOGE team to access personally identifiable information. It also directs Musk and DOGE to delete from their possession all non-anonymized personal data, and bars them from having access to SSA computers or code.
"Judge Ellen Lipton Hollander wrote that the SSA had likely violated administrative and privacy laws when it gave DOGE 'unbridled access to the personal and private data of millions of Americans, including but not limited to Social Security numbers, medical records, mental health records, hospitalization records, drivers’ license numbers, bank and credit card information, tax information, income history, work history, birth and marriage certificates, and home and work addresses.'
"She added that the 'defendants, with so-called experts on the DOGE Team, never identified or articulated even a single reason for which the DOGE Team needs unlimited access to SSA’s entire record systems, thereby exposing personal, confidential, sensitive, and private information that millions of Americans entrusted to their government.'"

Malicious actors have taken notice of news about the US Social Security System. We've seen multiple spam campaigns that attempt to phish users or lure them to download malware.
Emails with subjects like "Social Security Administrator.", "Social Security Statement", and "ensure the accuracy of your earnings record" contain malicious links and attachments.
One example contained a disguised URL that redirected to user2ilogon[.]es in order to download the trojan file named SsaViewer1.7.exe.Actors using social security lures are connected to malicious campaigns targeting major brands through their DNS records.

SpaceX opens the door to "sharing" its spacecraft tracking data with its "StarGaze" Space Situational Awareness (SSA) system.
Stargaze aggregates data from ~ 30,000 star trackers distributed across the StarLink satellite fleet to generate accurate orbit estimates and predictions of position and velocity for all detected objects in near real-time and the system generates Conjunction Data Messages (CDMs).
SpaceX will make Stargaze conjunction data available to any satellite operator (free of charge) that submits its own ephemeris (trajectory) data to the platform. Stargaze ephemeris is updated and shared publicly every hour.

"After installing anti-fraud checks for benefit claims made over the phone early last month, the Social Security Administration is considering walking back the policy after finding only two cases that had a high probability of being fraudulent.
The anti-fraud tool set up last month after weeks of changes to the agency’s telephone policies has slowed retirement claim processing by 25% and led to a "degradation of public service,” according to an internal May document obtained by Nextgov/FCW that examined potentially cutting the anti-fraud tool for phone claims.
Under the new policy, the agency found that only two benefit claims out of over 110,000 had a high probability of being fraudulent — and they aren’t guaranteed to be so. Less than 1% of claims were flagged as even potentially fraudulent at all.
“No significant fraud has been detected from the flagged cases,” the internal document said.
The attention to fraud, however, did cause delays, as SSA changed its phone procedures to add the checks on the backend."
