  6. Who was that masked mollusc? … an underwater science expedition has discovered a cartoon-like squid. A team from the Schmidt Ocean Institute spotted the quirky creature at 1,729 metres deep off the Argentinian coast. The glass squid is notable because of its transparent body and tentacles on its head.

    ‘About the size of a dumpling, the southern dumpling or bobtail squid are treasured photography subjects. These nocturnal creatures emerge cloaked in vivid colours as if wearing shimmering eye makeup. Usually timid, they tend to hide when seen. This one however, affectionately named Priscilla, happily lingered, posing for a photoshoot.’ Gadigal country, Sydney, New South Wales.

    "Luminescent #sardines from the genus Benthosema were omnipresent in the Central #ArcticOcean... These #fish, less than 10 centimeters long, and the #prawns and #squids we found, indicate that the ecosystem surrounding the #NorthPole is more biodiverse than previously assumed."

  12. Two new pygmy #squids discovered among the #corals of #Japan phys.org/news/2023-10-pygmy-sq paper: link.springer.com/article/10.1

    "The scientific names take inspiration from #JapaneseFolklore. Idiosepius #kijimuna is named after the short, red-haired forest #fairies that live in the #banyan trees of #Okinawa... The #Kodama genus is named after the round-headed spirits that live in ancient #trees, whose presence indicate a healthy forest."

    Giant eggs in a deep-sea squid esajournals.onlinelibrary.wile

    "#MBARI researchers had previously observed deep-sea #squids brooding their eggs, but this sighting was striking because the eggs were twice as large as those of other brooding deep-sea squids... this individual likely represents an unknown species of the family of #Gonatidae and one that broods giant eggs."

  14. (16 Apr) Elusive colossal squid finally caught on camera 100 years after discovery in world 1st footage — and it’s tiny

    A colossal squid has been filmed in its natural habitat for the first time ever, a century after it was first identified by scientists.

  15. A dumpling squid (Euprymna tasmanica)

    Also known as the southern bobtail squid, this #cephalopod inhabits shallow waters off the coast of southern Australia. It’s an ambush predator and uses mucus glands in its skin to coat itself in sand, where it then lies in wait for prey, like shrimp and small fish. Dumplings must learn to hunt fast: Because males of this species die shortly after mating and females die soon after laying eggs, newborn squid need to fend for themselves.

  16. Made good progress yesterday working through #DeathsDoor, an indie #ARPG that reminds me a lot of old-school #Zelda games. Great (also unforgiving) game so far, though some of the bosses are a bit of a challenge. You play as a crow, working your 9 to 5 to collect souls as an employed reaper. As one does.

    There's a restaurant in the game with the *best* chef - "Jefferson." He cracks me up.

    #Squid male alternative reproductive tactics are determined by birth date royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

    "#SpearSquid that hatch earlier in the season become 'consorts' that fight for mating opportunities. Those that hatch later become 'sneakers,' which use more clandestine mating tactics... once a mating tactic had been determined by their birth date, they stuck with it."

    Welcome. Mastodon is a place to read about interesting doings by interesting people. Today I found a link to some of Klee's teaching notes, an interview with D.Hofstadter, & neurosci factiods. And glorious photos of fungi in Scotland.

    To find what you like learn how to use searches using Hashtags (e.g. #squids ), Try out the list of links, like Explore, Local, Federated. Ignore the boring stuff and focus on the good stuff. And Mute the annoying stuff.

    This url ::

    :: has a simplified howto for navigating the aggregate Mastodon sites. The learning curve is frustrating but short. Then just follow your nose.
