Please welcome and follow @squeak! Squeak and @pharoproject are two very cool implementations of the Smalltalk programming language and they are both here on Mastodon now. Only Cuis is missing @juanvuletich 😉

I was lucky to, by chance, get into a programming class at @fernunihagen that taught OOP using Squeak and Pharo Smalltalk, and it was the coolest and most fun programming experience ever.

  2. In case you were wondering, Squeak still exists (and works fine on the MacBook Neo).

  3. @david_chisnall @blinry it wasn't just the code. With the #Squeak inspector, it was possible to navigate the object hierarchy to find AND optionally CHANGE ANY PROPERTY DYNAMICALLY in in situ. That was like having configuration super powers! 💪

I also loved that it was possible to rotate any window by an arbitrary angle. Windows could also be other shapes, like blobs. Who need things to be rectilinear 🤣

  4. Mice-infested cheese shop in south London is hit with a £75,000 fine after inspectors found droppings and nibbled ham. 🐁 🧀

  5. I haven't been active in #Smalltalk in several years. I have some great use cases that i want to start implementing, but I kinda want to get up to speed on what's happened in my absence.

So, I am taking a quick poll to see which #smalltalk everyone is using these days. #Pharo or #Squeak ?

  6. Twenty something years later, and I am still dreaming of the day when I can write in #Smalltalk as a full time day job, instead of using it as my secret productivity tool.

  7. @chemoelectric

Years ago, for very short period of time, I had ever explored Squeak (or Pharo, forget which one) for fun.

I was amazed that a programming language provides something similar with desktop environment and all things related with the programming language, including the tools are living inside the environment.

At the time, suddenly I remember Lisp Machine, GNU Emacs and Gnustep + Window Maker at the same time.

Although of course I realized these all are different.

  8. If all #smalltalk / #squeak programs are written in their own VM combo of IDE and operating system, how do you ship #software you write to other users? Do you have to ship your entire image or can you export just the methods/objects you need for your program?

  9. Here's a talk I gave to the UK Smalltalk Users Group, "Livecoding Language Models: AI Context in Live Environments" :: youtube.com/watch?v=5HbbIa5NT0 :: #smalltalk #squeak #ukstug #livecoding

  10. Big BIG fan of @Troggie’s Halloween persona, btw.

  11. TIL that the programming language Squeak (an ancestor of Go), is called that because it was "a language for communicating with mice". 😆😆😆

Ah, you are a minimalist that way. Sort of what #Squeak #Smalltalk does with its VM development (based on C). I'd want the high-level language to do heavy-lifting, so maybe #LispFlavouredErlang on top of PreScheme.

    > OS in PreScheme and Scheme
GNU Mes and #Guix must be on that track.

  13. Fascinating chat about #smalltalk and its origins and modern use. I love the concept, and as a former user of #squeak I'm interested in learning more about it.

  14. Bwahaha! It runs on Apple Silicon! They’ve kept it updated and alive.
