… undercover officers monitored grieving parents while they sought justice for relatives or campaigned to expose police malpractice, regularly deceived women into long-term relationships and fathered children, stole the identities of dead children and lied in court. SDS #undercovercops adopted false identities to infiltrate mainly leftwing groups between 1968 and 2008 in deployments that typically lasted four years.

Former Met Police Commissioner Lord Condon opens his evidence at the #Spycops Inquiry by making a personal apology, “to every single person who has been damaged”, over the decades, by the Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) over the 4 decades of the unit’s existence.
Says he endorses the official Met Police apology made on behalf of current Commissioner Mark Rowley.
He goes on to add that he is now aware of the “appalling behaviour” of some individual officers, but wants to make the point that “the greater fault lies with the Met Police as a whole”.
Paul Condon says that the #spycops were told daily to lie, cheat and deceive as a way of life. The Met should have realised that this work could be corrupting and even someone with a strong moral compass would give in to base instincts.

#Spycops survivors fear a new Home Office ‘consultation’ is an attempt to shut down the Undercover Policing Inquiry, just before it reaches 'our' time.
The Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance is calling on supporters not to fill in the consultation until they have a chance to respond.
The Inquiry, set up 11 years ago today, has covered the Met-police's Special Demonstration Squad from 1968-2008.
The next (4th) 'tranche' of the inquiry should cover the National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU) set up in 1999 to track green activists and public demonstrations. It was uncovered by the exposure by activists of Mark Kennedy. It's activities continue under different Specialist Operations groups.
It is the disclosure and closure relating to that unit that may be denied to those affected.
The Home Office must not hamper the search for truth and justice. Allow the inquiry to do the job it was called on to do, to hold police and public officials to account

One cannot fail to be impressed not only in Helen Steel's skill as a #spycops witness but her resilience and (despite it all) her strength and humour.
However it turn dark as the inquiry hears more about secret state police manipulation of women, leading Helen to consider going on the run with John Dines out of concern. She is very emotional and struggles to speak.
