  21. @LuciaG You might want to check out the finalists for this year’s Indie Ink Awards on IndieStoryGeek.com. Not all are self-published but many are! There are also the previous two years of Indie Ink Awards on there, as well as the #SPSFC books and #SPFBO books. (Self published science fiction and self published fantasy, respectively).

  26. I've had the pleasure of being a judge in the SPSFC this year, and my team was given 31 books to try. I gave 26 of them a chance and wrote down my thoughts on each of those 26. (Why not the remaining 5? I ran out of time, sorry!)

My thoughts on every book I "taste-tested": skaeth.com/spsfc-reading-first

It's been amazing to go through these books, and my hope is to shine a light on them for more readers to discover them!

  31. @undercarbonated @thegiddystitcher Thank you for the mention!! We have TONS of sci-fi and also fantasy from the #SPSFC and #SPFBO annual contests. In fact, as a judge this year for the SPSFC, I'm enjoying being inundated with incredible new-to-me sci-fi stories. All of them are on Indie Story Geek--I make sure of it every year.

  36. Very pleased to announce my participation in this year's Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (SPSFC4) - This time, my novel "309" was assigned to the "Peripheral Prospectors" judging team, which has presented its allocated books via this epic post.

Thanks to @davedobson for the artwork collecting all the covers!

I'll post thoughts as I go through them!

  38. We're looking for judges for the next Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (#SPSFC). I've been one all three years and have read some great indie SF. @spsfc

  39. I just finished uploading all of the latest year's #SPSFC books ( #SPSFC3 I believe) and all of the books from the new #SFINCS competition to indiestorygeek.com .
Remember, all of these books are eligible for the #IndieInkAwards competition!
Nominations are open through the end of November, so make sure you nominate your favorite #IndieBooks for the awards that make the most sense for them. All genres of indie books are welcome!

  40. for new #scifi authors, take a look at the #SPSFC, which is now open for the next cycle

    @spsfc

they have good rules and zero weird fees — i.e. a good setup for authors

(I’m critical of pay-for-play schemes etc etc which is pretty much everything that targets new authors, but this is not that: it doesn’t exploit authors at all. Enjoy!)

    🖖

  41. Does anyone know if there's a list (preferably as a spreadsheet) of #SPSFC2 entries? I want to make sure they're all on IndieStoryGeek.com (like I did for the first #SPSFC ) but the listing on the website, while gorgeous, is a bit cumbersome.

  42. My team in the Self-Published Science Fiction Contest needs a few more judges. I'm hoping to find some in the @bookstodon community. Mastodon's become a great place to talk books. #SPSFC

  43. @bookstodon I've only read Aestus myself (I loved it so much I wrote my own *very* spoilery review: fediverse.blog/~/TheBeastAtTan - I've got spoiler-free reviews on my Bookwyrm too if anyone hasn't read but is curious, link in my profile) so I have no comments on the others - please add yours if you've read any of the finalists!

I feel it's really important to promote this kind of stuff in the fediverse.

  44. The results of the SPSFC final are out - congratulations to all!

I don't know how many of the authors are on Mastodon, but I felt it was important to promote the results.

If any read this: well done! Getting to the final is a huge achievement and really shows the quality of your work.

Though reviews in a contest may by nature seem clinical, remember: your books always evoke a strong emotional response of joy in your readers too 😊

  45. Felt like writing some of my thoughts about Aestus, by S. Z. Attwell. This is basically all spoilers - I have spoiler-free reviews on my Bookwyrm.

As Aestus Book 1 is a finalist in the SPSFC competition this weekend, I felt it was a good time to write something more detailed about why I love these books.

  46. My friend Holly Ash's pre-dystopian eco terrorism novel Cleansing Rain has sadly been cut from the #spsfc.

    But, it's on sale!

From the author: "I’m still thrilled to have made it to the quarter finals so I’m putting both ebooks in the duology on sale this weekend!"

  47. I should also add that INTERGALACTIC BASTARD is a part of #SPSFC2. After Broken Ascension was a semi-finalist in last year's #SPSFC I decided to give my bonkers #cyberpunk #prowrestling #scifi book a shot at glory.

There's a bunch of books from this year's contest on sale right now, including INTERGALACTIC BASTARD.

  48. So, the judges in #SPSFC that had INTERGALACTIC BASTARD to read seemingly loved it. #scifi #scifibooks #prowrestling

"All of the people who got to read this book were like 'oh my god, this book is fantastic, it's so fun' and they loved it."

I'm pretty sure you'll love it, too. books2read.com/intergalacticba

  49. Absolutely chuffed to find out my debut novel The Empyrean is officially one of the #SPSFC quarterfinalists today:

    atboundarysedge.com/2022/11/21

I guess this is where I attach a picture to show what it is? I've been on Mastodon for a few days and I don't think I've actually described my book anywhere yet 😅
