Does anybody know if there is anywhere to get #Sprouting supplies such as #SproutingJar lids and seeds locally in #Memphis Tennessee?
I did discover that Home Depot does have the lids in their online store, so I could pick them up locally, but that's not quite the same as shopping locally, and I'd still need seeds.
I'm hoping to be able to grow fresh vegetables in a boat to supplement provisions.

My first attempt to resume #sprouting ended in a moldy disaster. Part of the problem was me forgetting to do the rinse on a regular schedule, but I think another issue is that tap water from my faucet is so warm. So I started a new regimen that involves alarms set for 7 am and pm to make sure I rinse the seeds. I also now use water from the fridge so that it is cooler. This has so far produced 3 batches of sprouts for eating. Hooray! It's not a garden, but it's something!

Everyone's #gardening toots just reminded me that I was supposed to restart my indoor gardening efforts today by setting up a new jar of seeds to sprout. Hopefully I'll have a crop to eat next week. The desert weather is too hard for me to get much outdoor gardening success this year, but sprouts I should be able to manage.

Do you have a favorite place to get seeds for sprouting? I normally use Sprout People and they're fine, just curious what other options might be out there.

Tracing the reason many mangroves seeds sprout while they are still on their parent tree, a trait that is rare for other plants.
"While viviparity is rare among trees in general, it’s common among the mangroves, roughly 80 species that live on warm coastlines around the world. These trees are already unusual, as they absorb water that’s up to 100 times saltier than what most plants can tolerate."

Dear Friends of #Autumn/#Fall,
Went along my local #chalk #stream. Lovely day for seeing heron, #fish, #squirrels, #cormorants, #donkeys at Dean #City #Farm. Popped into #Morden Hall #Garden #Center and came back with 'Tuscany Superb' rose. Hope it grows. Also went into the fish/aquarium center to inquire about growing herbs #indoor. The assistant was very helpful but was convinced I was into growing #cannabis, which sadly is still illegal.
Anyways he gave me some great advice and a nearby shop that specialises in growing orchids, fresh veg, herbs and 'erb indoors. They have six shops throughout the UK. Will check them out sometime soon. I need White and Blue #LED for #sprouting and #growing and if growing mini toms, also Red for the #flowering and ripening ... -
Mini #greenhouse #seedlings are coming along well. I've transplanted 12 cells of #mesclun #SaladGreens into #garden beds & more will be transplanted on Friday.
Pea & bean seeds are #sprouting from older seeds. I sowed fresher seeds today. Baby broccoli & cauliflower are emerging. I'm about 2 weeks behind with tomatoes & cukes.#zone8 #GardenersOfMastodon #SDFgardeners #FoodSecurity #SelfSufficiency #Plants #FoodGardening #GrownFromSeed #Seedlings #GrowFood #Greens #YYJgardeners #VictoriaBC

Used #HealthyChoice steamer bowls make cool #sprout towers. This is a bunch of mung beans.
I've also successfully sprouted sunflower seeds and garbanzo beans in them.

CW: Enzymes and Oat Drinks for the Revolution
Based on science (see above toot), I concluded that you can make #oat milk using diastatic #malt (aka. active baker's malt), since malt naturally contains the enzyme #amylase, which breaks down starches into sugars. While #sprouting, the berries produce this enzyme to digest the starches.
Producing malt from cereal berries is easy and doesn't require special equipment, but it takes some time. However, you don't need a lot of malt, so you don't need to do this often.
- Sprout some cereal berries. You don't need one of these fancy sprouting glasses -- a nutbag or muslin cloth (which you need to make plant milks anyway) is all you need; you'll find instructions online. Sprouting takes a few (3-5) days, so plan ahead.
- Spread the sprouts on a baking tray and bake them at 50-60 °C (= 122-140 °F) until the grains are completely dry.
- Pour the flour into a box and keep it in a fridge.Traditionally, malt is made using #barley (which contains a lot of amylase), but you can also make it with other grains. For #oats, however, you need to use "naked oats".

CW: Low Tech Production of Enzymes for the Revolution
The enzyme Amylase is used to break down starches into sugars -- a process known as Hydrolysis. This is e.g. required in the (industrial) production of (durable) oat milk. Industrially, amylase is produced using bacteria, but enzymes also naturally occur in grains. Basically, their original purpose is to "feed" the sprouts and the growing 'baby plant'.
In conservation with other anarchists, we agreed that every revoluzer should get -- among other things -- some tasty oat drinks. However, can we also do so without being reliant on #BigBioTech? Perhaps a distributed, small-scale production of enzymes -- akin to the #OpenInsulin project (https://openinsulin.org/) -- would be the best solution in the long term. In the meantime, we could try out some #LowTech solutions.
Indeed, there's a technique that exploits the natural production of enzymes in sprouting seeds, in particular oats:
- Let oats sprout
- Ground the seeds
- Filter through two layers of cheesecloth
- CentrifugateThe technique was explored in the following scientific paper. In particular, they optimized over various variables (such as sprouting time and acidity).
