I was flipping rocks today and came across more of the bright red springtails. I think they were under 90% of my landscape rocks today. I took these at higher magnification, and to my surprise, I seemed to get great depth of field. These guys are so tiny, but I took these at over 5x. There were a couple of the even tinier translucent white entomobryiods but I didn't really capture them. They actually spring!

Having an off day... or week kinda. But, this thing is cute. I need to shove my camera in the dirt more. I actually shook the dirt off this leaf to find this springtail

Borrowing a flash head from a friend and made a simple and compact bounce diffuser. I like a lot of the results from today, but not amazing for shiny stuff. I'm a bit envious of some of the macro photographers that are happy with a diffuser they bought off the internet.

Sometimes a moth is more than it seems.

I looked twice at this moth photo I was uploading to #iNaturalist. There was an orange spot on one wing. A parasitic mite?

No! It's a globular springtail!

I'm not sure if it hitched a ride into the moth light on this moth or came in on another insect.

#Springtail #Orchesella #cincta is up to 4 mm long, native to #Europe/Canada and is #herbivorous/ fungi-bacteriovorous, #living e.g.in dead plant tissue. Specimen below: on #deadwood with island-like #fungalgrowth, mites, e.g. #Linopodes, and i.a. #isopods.
G. Ernsting & J. A. Isaaks (2002) found the #dimorphic #gendersize with smaller males being due to growth inhibition by #spermatophore development.

Old photo but now with a completely different ID, Ptenothrix renateae, thanks to some kind people on iNaturalist. I never knew that a #springtail could have antennae like these! I just saw this little one over on tumbr and I'm amazed. This one is from the genus Temeritas, spotted in Japan.

It looks like a berry with two cat whiskers stuck in it. Amazing creature! #SpringtailSunday

Saw these springtails sheltering under a mushroom. By chance I noticed that they seem to be infected with a fungus as well. Each has a few threads emerging from it- on their backs, heads, and antennae.

Also, these springtails were still alive and moving (a bit, slowly). Maybe it's just a funky springtail hairdo?
