  21. May 2024 temperature departures from 1991-2020 normal around the Arctic show a coherent pattern with three main areas of above normal temperatures and three areas of below normal. The warmth in the Nordic Arctic and parts of Canada was notable, while SW Greenland and the western Russian Arctic were notably cool. For the #Arctic overall (land & sea poleward of 60ºN), the May average temperature was 0.4ºC above normal but the coolest May since 2018. #Climate #Canada #Spring2024 @Climatologist49

  26. May was generally cooler than normal across Alaska, but especially in southwest and in the Bering Strait/northwest Arctic regions. Bethel, King Salmon and Kodiak all saw the coolest May in more than a decade. #akwx #Climate #Spring2024

  31. Alaska wildfire in May was very close to the long term median. Cumulative area burned this season 6699 acres (2711 ha). Most of that from the Popovitch Creek Coal Seam fire (3954 acres) and Atchuelinguk fire (2200 acres). May wildfire tells us exactly nothing about the season as a whole. The weather now through early July will make or break the season: warm and dry, cloudy and wet, thunderstorms or not. #akwx #Wildfire #Alaska #Spring2024

  36. The Atchuelinguk wildfire is burning in tundra in the lower Yukon River area north of Marshall in western Alaska (Yupik county). This is prime time for tundra wildfire: after snowmelt but before vegetation green-up, so last year’s dried grass and brush. #akwx #Wildfire #Spring2024

  51. Fairbanks Airport 0.52 inches (13.2mm) of rain since Thursday afternoon, making this the highest 24-hour May precip total since 2012. Eielson AFB reported 0.68 inches (17.3mm) of rain.
