  1. Some small rural towns stay connected through Facebook groups.

If you want to reach people in that small town, for social or commercial reasons — you post to that towns' Facebook groups.

    ...

What could the Fediverse and Social Web learn from this?

  2. To me it seem as if — Rumble is much more popular as a YouTube alternative than PeerTube.

    Why might that be?

    ...

I have my own suspicions of why.

But — what do you think?

  8. What would it take to get photo journalists and video journalists on the Fediverse?

They can keep using Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc, too.

But, what would it take to ALSO get them here?

  9. I have been trying to think of ways of making the Fediverse more Friendly and Welcoming.

    To people outside the Fediverse.

To people thinking of joining the Fediverse.

To people who recently joined the Fediverse.

    And more.

    ...

What do YOU think could make the Fediverse more Friendly and Welcoming?

  10. Something Fediverse related that I am working on —

    Toddlerverse

Basically, what I have been thinking about is —

What would take to make areas of the Fediverse geared towards toddlers.

(The document I am writing is still a work in progress.)

(I am a parent of young children, so I have first-hand experience with kids usage of online media, including social-media.)

  11. The WAFRN idea of custom themes is very cool, too.

Decades ago, being able to 'theme' and 'skin' things was common.

I like that WAFRN has this feature.

It might be fun to make able to use your own custom verbs, too.

    For example:

"Joe Blow has throw a water balloon at you."

I think it wouldalso be nice if other Fediverse software supported the displaying of these types of activities (even if they don't support creating them.)

I like the idea of having "fun" things that are part of (at least some of) the Fediverse.

The WAFRN idea of "bites" / "pokes" seems like one of them.

I would assume notifications for it might look something like:

    "Joe Blow has bit you."

  14. We should take this as an opportunity to ask — WHY?

And — how could we improve things on the Fediverse to be attractive to scientists?

    ...

BTW, I was part of Science-Twitter, back when I used to be active on Twitter. And, wanted to be part of a Science-Fedi, too.

    So, this affected me, too.

  19. I link to my personal web-site from my Mastodon account.

On my Mastodon account, that link shows up with the "verification" checkmark and highlight.

I did that by adding special HTML code to my personal web-site.

If you want to do the same — add similar code your personal web-site.

Just replace my URL with yours.

    Ex:

    <link rel="me" href="YOUR_PROFILE_URL_HERE" />

And, add that to the <head> section of the home-page of your personal web-site.

"One of the great things about Twitter, which has been in decline for years, was having so many unique experts and accomplished people all across different fields who, even if they had incredibly dumb shit political opinions, would still at least sometimes share unique insights about the crafts they happened to be total fucking geniuses in. It's been genuinely sad seeing that aspect of Twitter continue to wither away."

  21. An interesting quote from @geerlingguy .

The TL;DR is that — for him to use PeerTube or any other Fediverse alternative to YouTube — he would need to be able to make a living from it.

He is not the only one who has expressed this sentiment.

This is something I have been thinking about and talking a lot about for a while now.

(I know I am not the only one.)

Given current events, what isn't on this list probably says something about who is and isn't in Fediverse yet.

And perhaps where we (who would like to grow and spread the Fediverse) could improve things.

I have seen some (non-aggressive) alt-text advocates write the alt-text themselves, and offer it to the users (who didn't add alt-text).

That is much, much better than yelling at someone (for not including alt-text)!

No nagging. No aggressiveness. No hostility.

But — the aggressiveness of those alt-text and CW advocates was (and probably still is) causing people who newly joined the Fediverse to leave —

Because one of these new users' early experiences on the Fediverse feels like they are being yelled at by these alt-text and content-warning advocates. And, don't feel welcomed. And leave.

The Fediverse's Eternal November (which technically started in late October 2022) did happen.

I think one good thing about it is that — it feels like the very aggressive alt-text and content-warning advocates seem less common.

That doesn't mean that alt-text and CWs don't have value. (I often add alt-text, for example.)
