Spotted Towhee in the Coyote Brush
A rancher suing to keep cattle in Point Reyes got a profile in the San Francisco Chronicle this week. The profile said he "fears for the future of Point Reyes" which is "choked with coyote brush" in areas where the park no longer allows grazing. I don't understand how someone could say that who walks by the Coyote Brush every spring, resounding with the songs of Wrentits, Spotted Towhees, Bewick's Wrens, and so many other birds. There's an enormous ancient California Oak three houses down on the alley that quietly splits our neighborhood. The tree is clearly visible on aerial photos from when this neighborhood was an orchard (1940's?), and it's a credit to the developer for not chopping it down 65 years ago. It's very popular with our birds, providing both a clear vantage point as well as excellent cover. Even full-grown hawks easily hide in it.
Something has been singing gorgeously from that old oak for several days, and I finally got a fleeting glance of it: a spotted towhee, all decked out for courting! I had no idea they could sing like that. And like the other sparrows, I so rarely see them in trees that it's easy to forget they know how to fly.)
