Radio Propagation

Sporadic-E propagation continues to be strong across Europe this afternoon. The MUF is above 144 MHz in the eastern bit beyond Europe (red contact lines).

The area where the lines cross indicates dense sporadic-E clouds are at that location causing the MUF (maximum useable frequency) to rise high enough for signals of that frequency to refract from it.

3 hour 35 minute #StarTrails #timelapse from images taken overnight on 10th/11th August 2024. This was created from 1,400 x 8 second shots at ISO-1600 f/3.5. I stacked the images in #StarStaX and saved the cumulative files to create this video. There were 3 #Perseid #Meteors + 1 #sporadic #meteor in this video, the rest is aircraft and satellites.

Sporadic-E over northern France is causing a high MUF (Maximum Useable Frequency) over northern Europe this lunchtime. Propagation into FM Band 2 is taking place (1st map, brown lines).

A large high pressure area over Europe is also providing settled conditions with elevated tropospheric propagation conditions across the continent (2nd map).
