Started carving these two pieces of maple wood that came from a tree in a friend's back yard. One will be a spoon, the other a butter knife. I have a lot more wood to remove but this is a joy to carve.
The curve on the piece to the right came from my attempts to axe off a chunk of the long branch. This was my first time with an axe and it's harder than it looks! I'm going to preserve that curve as the bowl of a spoon.
BeaverCraft tools are my choice here, they are sharp out of the box, and support Ukraine.
I have a session booked with the bandsaw at my local reuse studio for the start of September to make blanks from the thicker piece of wood.

I had some time left for #SpoonCarving this weekend. I started experiencing a little peace of wood, leftover while splitting another peace for someone else.

Ich hab hier nur ca 5 Accounts zu dem Thema gefunden (eine allerdings mit großartigen Sachen).
Klingt natürlich auch nischig das Thema aber das WWW, YouTube oder Insta ist voll davon.
Ich grüble also wirklich, ob die Community hier einfach gar nicht aktiv ist oder ob ich das Fediverse noch nicht richtig bedienen kann.

Time to carve again… First work made out of black cherry plum wood (prunus nigra / Blutpflaume).
Really nice material, lovely colors and comfortable to carve.Using some Mora knives, Pfeil spoon knives and a Fiskars Norden axe.

Just finished (I say finished, but I think "gave up" is a better phrase) carving my first spoon in about eighteen years. It's lumpy and wonky, and the bowl's a little too deep for a comfy eating spoon, but a little too shallow for a scoop.
Some parts are lovely though.
Room for improvement then. But since the first step to mastery is giving yourself permission to suck, I reckon it's a good start.

It's been awhile since I carved a spoon. Though the design is simple this is the best spoon I have ever carved. The symmetry is spot on and the walls of the inside of the bowl are even and free of tool marks. Up to now the bowls have always had some goofiness. The handle is also more slender than I typically make them and I angled the bowl of the spoon for a more ergonomic spooning action. You know, the way spoons are supposed to be made.
