  1. Carving at the beach is challenging* ;-(

A big crack at the Spoonbowl occurred 😢
Spoon carving community, what should I do?

*sun and wind create a fast and uncontrolled drying of the wood.

Now i started tob work it out.

    This is the Beginning:

  3. Zig Zag is done!

Little training to get used to the technique, my knife and different patterns.

Later to be used to decorate handcarved wooden spoons

  4. Hazelnut spoon with a walnut oil finish on. The oil is still wet in this photo. Almost entirely done with knife, axe, and gouge, this got a little sanding on the end of the handle.

The wood is from a small log I got 6 years ago that's been living in my freezer in 3 different houses. Next up is the last piece of apple wood I got in the same batch, and I'm grateful I have an axe now because apple wood is dense and hard.

Early next month I have a session booked with the bandsaw at my local maker space to cut the maple pieces from my boyfriend's yard. I have a troubled history with that bandsaw, it tends to break down or snap the band when I use it.

  5. An evening with (wood)chips & beer.

Practising chipcarving patterns with my new chipcarving knive 'Per' from Hans Karlsson.

Pattern copied from my teacher Ellen de Lange-Ros.

(Some time ago i documented how i made the wooden boards that i am carving now)

  6. Today I used the cherry wood butter knife to butter my breakfast toast, and it worked well!

Next carving is a spoon in hazelnut wood. I got this out of the freezer, used the hatchet to take off some of the excess, and started thinning the handle and hollowing out the bowl.

I thought this was apple wood, but looking closer at the grain, this is hazelnut and the remaining piece in the freezer is apple wood. Hazelnut wood smells like cucumbers, apple wood is a smoother, more orange colour.

  7. It's amazing the difference oil makes! Put a generous helping of walnut oil on this butter knife/cheese spreader and now it's going to sit while the oil cures. That will take about a week to be fully done.

I had to use sandpaper on the inside of the finger hold, I couldn't get it perfect with my knives, but the rest is knife work, followed by a porcelain burnisher. That step makes a difference too, smoothing out the surface and added a silky polished feel.

  8. The final result after two hours of woodwork (i had to learn and experience the behaviour of my new draw knife):

Two pieces of mostly plain and flat (cherry?) wood.

Now it’s time to sleep in a box, covered with a lot of woodchips to dry slowly and prevent cracking or twisting (hopefully 😉)

When it’s dry enough, I want to practise different chipcarving Cuts and patterns to get used to it.

  9. Splitting some wood (I think it’s cherry) to produce some flat surfaces to practise chipcarving the next days.
    (I got a new chipcarving knife 😄

  10. Measure twice, cut, or drill, once. I'm making a jig to hold wood so I can axe chunks off without worrying the axe will hit the concrete patio floor.

Base board and sides are marked for drilling the pilot holes for screws to attach two sides and make a right-angle working surface.

This is my first time walking into a hardware place and getting lumber, they cut each piece in half for me so I have a second try if the base piece splits. It's all solid wood, not plywood or MDF.

  11. Started carving these two pieces of maple wood that came from a tree in a friend's back yard. One will be a spoon, the other a butter knife. I have a lot more wood to remove but this is a joy to carve.

The curve on the piece to the right came from my attempts to axe off a chunk of the long branch. This was my first time with an axe and it's harder than it looks! I'm going to preserve that curve as the bowl of a spoon.

BeaverCraft tools are my choice here, they are sharp out of the box, and support Ukraine.

I have a session booked with the bandsaw at my local reuse studio for the start of September to make blanks from the thicker piece of wood.

  12. I had some time left for #SpoonCarving this weekend. I started experiencing a little peace of wood, leftover while splitting another peace for someone else.
While doing my first cuts I decided to change direction and to try to leave some bark at the handle.
