I've been counting birds on my bike work commute between Christchurch and Lincoln, NZ, since 2003. On Friday, I counted my *first ever* Kōtuku Ngutupapa, Royal Spoonbill, on the route.

It was feeding in a paddock that had been recently scraped clear preparing it for a housing subdivision, but in the meantime had filled with water after a heavy rain. There are also restored wetlands nearby that I hope was what attracted it in. Perhaps there will be more.

An high tide visit to Bowling Green Marsh earlier this evening & lots of waders on show.

Can you spot the Curlew Sandpiper amongst the Redshank, Little Egret and Spoonbill? Also on the Marsh a Spotted Redshank so, all in all, good birding.

I met up with a couple of friends for some high tide birding at Bowling Green Marsh reserve (and then some lunch). It was fairly quiet with high water levels (the RSPB seem to be having trouble fixing some sluice gates) but these two immature Spoonbill flew in to roost.

The Roseate Spoonbill is one of the most unique and beautiful pink birds in the avian kingdom and their plumage is especially more vivid when in breeding plumage. This one was preening it’s colorful feathers when I happened by.
