Fire crews continue patrol and mop-up of fire areas while repairing impacts from suppression activities

    CURRENT SITUATION:

Efforts are focused on monitoring and patrolling fire areas and searching for and extinguishing any isolated pockets of heat to protect against potential flare ups. Crews will also wrap up suppression repair activities in the coming days. As mop up and suppression repair wind down, firefighting resources will be reassigned to larger fires throughout the region to assist those incidents in need.

Thanks to the leadership and valiant efforts of local area firefighters, nearly 11,000 structures were saved across the Spokane Area Fires during the initial hours of the urban conflagration. Additionally, because of the disciplined efforts of first responders and attentive residents, the prompt and efficient evacuation of over 60,000 people from the fire areas resulted in no loss of life.

The Environmental Protection Agency will be completing investigations for hazardous materials before fire-affected areas are transitioned to hazardous waste teams and then debris removal specialists. This work is anticipated to go on for several weeks. Utility and transportation crews continue to remove hazardous trees and repair infrastructure. The public is urged to exercise caution when driving in fire areas to protect firefighters and crews working in and around these areas.

All evacuation restrictions have been lifted; however, residents should remain vigilant for new fire starts as fire danger remains high. Burned structures and vehicles may still contain heat, highly toxic materials and release toxic vapors. Those returning to fire areas are strongly encouraged to obtain personal protective equipment (PPE) before approaching areas with burned or damaged structures. Free PPE is available from local fire stations and red-cross trucks located throughout the fire areas.

Residents whose property has been affected by fire retardant should avoid using pressure washers or harsh scouring pads or detergents to remove it from surfaces. For helpful information on removing fire retardant, please visit bit.ly/retardantremoval.
