The last of Alan Birch is finally split and stacked.
This was a tough birch. I thought I lost my mojo but some ancient oak and fresh maple logs did split just fine so it was just that this birch was really tough. Probably because it didn't grow in a forest but on its own on a windy hill. Sadly it rotted inside as forked trunks often do.
As you can see I resorted to the chainsaw for some of the knottier pieces, the rest with wedge and axe.

Split, ya bastard! 2026 edition.
I wonder if the little Scheppach/Güde electrohydraulic splitter could handle these or just bend itself in half?

In the real world
We're not dealing with abstract “community dynamics.” we're dealing with live-aboard boaters under pressure, rowers, landowners, council, Environment Agency and scarcity of space (moorings). This in the end is about visibility vs invisibility on the river, so friction isn’t theoretical - it’s structural. Let's look at the conflict patterns we’re seeing: Back-channel poisoning (#whispers #splitting) “X group are the problem”, “They’ve already decided this”, “Don’t […] -
will keep my fingers crossed with isp and fiber - heck even 1g is fantastic - 2g for 10 bucks more is even better though - maybe gpon is restricted #splitting hairs

Very satisfying, those last few strokes when the log starts cracking and at the next stroke the wedge sinks in deep.

Small thing I noticed today: splitting `.mkv` files using `ffmpeg` via the `-ss` and `-t` options works great, but the resulting `.mkv` file contains the wrong number of frames in the metadata. Evidently the total frames from the source file gets written into the metadata instead of the resulting frames post-splitting which is annoying. Not a deal breaker, but kind of annoying...easy to fix with a quick run through `mkvmerge` but still just weird.

Finding the balance
Too warm: Solve all the problems. Do all the things. Turn every idea into an action or object in the real world. And do it perfectly.
Too cold: Relax. Talk to people, occasionally. Read great books. Savor the moments between. How you do this one thing is how you do everything.
Just right:
…nope sorry I got nothing no way in the world I can possibly figure out what’s between these two extremes there’s nothing in the middle warm is perfect until it’s not cold is perfect until it’s not gee if only there was some way that one could find something that was hunh I don’t know maybe a little bit of both meh no warm is perfect oh wait no cold is perfect.
Right. It’s so patently obvious where the balance would lie. And yet, when I’m polarized one way or the other… now, where is that damn forest?! All these trees are blocking my view!

Splitting wearables straps and cracking PVC leather gaming chairs could be prevented by applying UV filtering sprays to stop photodegradation
I've had Fitbit as well as an LG smartwatch strap starting to split after a year or two of use, and I just heard that a similar type of cracking happens with the synthetic PVC leather of gaming chairs, and the advice is to apply a good UV filtering spray like you get for dashboards of cars. A typical brand mentioned is 303 UV Protectant Spray which lubricates the material and filters UV. You'd probably want to apply this at least monthly but it may go a long way to making the material last a lot longer. There are similar sprays produced for tents and other outdoor furniture. But its too late to try this after the damage is done, it needs to be applied from just after to acquire the devices. https://squeet.me/objects/962c3e10a8362cc5670d10d367de29b5d5259ae0

On splitting
Caution: seemingly disjointed thoughts ahead, followed by unifying insight.
I hope.
I’m pragmatic and rational with the usual dose of emotions thrown in, because, human. I also find that I too often ignore the messaging coming from my body and my brain. I sometimes get into deep work on something technical, and I have trouble knowing when I should stop. (Answer: A few hours in, at a place where I know what I should do next. Never work until stuck; Don’t stop there.) I push everything too far and then crash mentally, or even physically.
I’ve recently found I have Lyme disease. “Boooo!” But the treatment—at least, the initial treatment option—is a simple antibiotic called Doxycycline. “Yay, modern science!” Which I take twice per day on an empty stomache and it makes me pretty nauseous. “Booooo,” (more vociforously.) I usually eat dinner by 6:30pm, and the evening 8:30pm pill isn’t usually bad. But the 8:30am pill on a totally empty stomach is nausea-roulette about 40 minutes later.
Splitting is the name for all-or-nothing thinking: You’re either with me, or against me. This project is suceeding or failing. I am a sucess or a failure. Partly this comes from focusing on outcomes; I set lots of goals, and I set them high on purpose, so usually I don’t reach them. “Booooo,” combined with some splitting leads to, “I suck.”
In Stoic parlance, a “dispreferred indifferent” is something you do not prefer, and over which you have no control and are therefore indifferent to the outcome. (Stoicism crib notes: Almost everything is an “indifferent” since you fully control only your own thoughts.) Vomitting around 9am every day is definitely a DISpreferred indifferent. I can drink plenty of water, I can pay attention to my posture, (unexpectedly it drastically affects my stomach reaction,) I can avoid laying down, I can avoid getting up, etc. …and it’s still nausea-roulette.
I have had a superlatively enjoyable week since starting this medication.
Wait, what?
Seriously. Something about having this [actually quite minor] regular nausea thing seems to be treating my splitting thinking. “Oh, nice it’s time to work on this cool thing I want to see suceed!” “Oh, nice it seems to be time to vomit!” “Oh, nice that was just a wave of nausea!” “It’s really going to be hot outside today, but it’s cool on the patio for now. Nice!” “Oh, are we vomitting now? That’s nice too!” “Oh, I have an idea for something to do this afternoon. Nice!” It seems to have all just run together into this general state of, “nice!”
Ok, yeah, that may be pretty messed up. But, gotta go, it’s 8:30.
