  1. are split keyboards worth the hype? what’s your experience with them vs regular mechanical keyboards + switching between a standard laptop keyboard when out and about to the split keyboard at home?

i don’t have plans to get one now, largely because of how difficult they are to find and the consequent higher costs… the ZSA Moonlander is what i’ve been eyeing for a while, but i’m curious to hear what people think

  2. A good three weeks later I'm up to ~82 WPM on the split keyboard, at least for regular text, finding symbols and shortcuts is still a bit slower!

  3. Slowly getting there, at least for the letter keys I've seen to update my muscle memory quite well!

Doing any shortcuts and moving around is still less ingrained, despite having put movements on a vim-style hjkl -based layer.

  4. I'm crushed. The left half of my lily58 ergo mech keyboard started flaking out yesterday. Once plugged in it types 5tgb and then those keys go dead. I'm thinking a short.

It's a boardsource.xyz buy, not quite a year old. I'm going to reach out but any troubleshooting would be appreciated.

8. I made a start on my 30-key keymap. I think the options in vial seem very limiting at first glance but it is also very possible I don’t really understand the power I might get from it #SplitMechanicalKeyboard

More and more I just wish that the keyboards could know what program is active to give context sensitive layouts.

I think this idea comes from being very used to vi/vim style modal editing. I don’t need my keys to be alphas in the most cases. I’m happy switching to inputting characters in a separate mode so I want to design my keymap like that.

If the OS could be more expressive in telling the keyboard what modal state to be in that could also be really interesting.

  10. Me watching myself getting into split keyboards, key mapping, ergonomic keyboard layouts and finally creating my own keyboard layout to help me in the way towards learning this other interesting but too different keyboard layout.

  11. Wrapped up the 3D modelling and prints. Quite happy with it. Designed a tilted stand as well but still getting used to that and not even sure I want / need it.

  12. Soldered up another Sofle keyboard and hacked it a bit to support ProMicro RP2040 microcotroller which has 512x the flash memory otherwise available on the Atmega ProMicro. Last firmware built for the latter chip left me 2 bytes of free flash space. That was "a bit" on the low side to add support for RGB LED indicators for layers and whatnot. Not to mention the OLED display actually doing something useful.

  13. I am disappointed with the Kailh box brown switches on my #ZSAMoonlander #SplitMechanicalKeyboard because they don't feel very tactile.

This review, keebworks.com/kailh-box-brown/ , would have told me that they have a very small "bump" right up near the top of the range of travel.

The Outemu browns, from my re-entry to the #MechanicalKeyboard world experiment, feel much more like my IBM model M, but sometimes register key presses before the bump.

Kailh's never give me false positive key presses.

  18. Dear #keyboard and #SplitMechanicalKeyboard nerds. I want to tell you about these little 'desk pillows' filled with plastic beads:
I missed some good wrist rests when I switched to a split setup and these pillows are super comfortable and at 10 bucks a piece, are some of the best purchased I made for my desk. Highly recommend.

Oh, and while searching for a link, it seems the German hama shop currently has them on sale for 3eurs: de.hama.com/00050218/hama-hand
