This 40-year-old debate with Gayatri Chakravorty #Spivak was uploaded last year and recommended to me today. I've been watching it and finding her phenomenal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVfTgiE4FAYMy reaction when encountering obscurantist philosophical texts - particularly poststructuralist - is to be frustrated by what feels like pretentiousness for its own sake (and that of the demands of the academy's cottage industry), the fetishization of jargon, and extreme removal from addressing core problems... They / Them has occurred to me, but I am also quite partial to #Spivak #pronoun stylings...

...which could just mean I use 'e' instead of he or she.
I'm open to suggestions though, if anyone would like to throw any thoughts down.

"#Spivak is not saying that people in positions of privilege should never engage WITH marginalized voices, but first and foremost, we need to be wary of any privileged intellectual's claim to know or speak FOR the ‘Other’. Second, because of structural disadvantages, it’s extremely difficult to find instances where marginalized (subaltern) women can in fact insert themselves into public conversation authoritatively without mediation. The 'subaltern as woman' may literally be able to SPEAK, but those mediating factors -- institutional gatekeepers who police what is thinkable or sayable, privileged actors who are motivated by their own self-interest, and many others -- mean that we may not ever be able to HEAR her voice directly."

Gayatri Chakravorty #Spivak gilt als Mitbegründerin der postkolonialen Theorie. Über ihren Text «Can the Subaltern speak?»

Man, #Spivak's #Calculus. I remember when I got this copy. I was finishing high school. It felt like a magical world that I didn't know could exist, a whole completely different and mysterious way of doing mathematics. I remember travelling to New York to meet some metal head kid I knew from the internet who had also felt some sort of connexion to the book and the topic. Where is he now?
That was 20 years ago. My copy is now worn and tattered and falling apart. I just patched it with duct tape.
