Visited #spikeisland in #cork harbor yesterday with some friends and family. I was struck by the scale of the fort, the beautiful views of the surrounding area, and touched by the stories of many of the prisoners who were wrongly imprisoned there over the years.

A smuggled spoon pressed cold against the palm of my hand, a comb tucked into a loose floorboard, a stamp in my sock and a muffin hidden in the mess. None of it made sense yet, but I would figure it out. I had to. I was going to escape Spike Island, and when I did, my captors would shout: "He Fled!" by Mark K. We waited hours for the fireworks on Spike Island yesterday and, of course, I have loads of photos of the event, which will be posted here in due course.
Here’s one photo, done a little differently, but I like the effect the lines of the fireworks in the air made in the air. Removing the colour simplifies them into the little fingers of flame reaching out in a quick instant.

After the establishment of the Irish Free State the Royal Navy continued to maintain its presence at Spike Island in Cork Harbour as one of as one of three Treaty ports retained by the British. The other two treaty ports were Berehaven in County Cork and Lough Swilly in County Donegal. Spike Island remained under British sovereignty until 11 July 1938 when it was returned to Ireland.
