  1. #TIL Both David Beckham and his wife Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham (née Adams) are knighted. Posh Spice getting her own knighthood in 2017.

BUT! Mel B / Scary Spice is also knighted!

So almost half of all the Spice Girls are knighted.

  5. Spice World – a free, unlicensed Dune RPG

Just picked up a free little indie game called Spice World by Aaron King. Despite the name, it’s got nothing to do with the 1997 musical comedy (if you’re interested in that, try this game instead)

Spice World is a mash-up of the Traveller and Powered by the Apocalypse systems, set in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe. It’s a wholly unofficial fan work – 48 pages, with a lot of unlicensed art (mostly from comics)

The whole combination of Traveller and PBTA is an interesting idea that I’ve thought a lot about. The reputation of the two systems couldn’t be more different. Traveller is, in RPG terms, ancient, dating from 1977 – almost as old as D&D itself. It’s one of the trad-iest of trad games.

PBTA dates from 2010, so it’s not the flavor-of-the month it once was, but it’s still a clearly modern 21st century storytelling game.

However, despite the many differences, the basic mechanic is the same – Roll 2D6 with modifiers, and try to roll high. This opens up a lot of interesting possibilities that Spice World takes advantage of.

    Character Creation

The stats are somewhat similar to Traveller – Strength, Dexterity, Endurance, Stoicism, Education, and Social Standing. Stats are determined by 2d6 rolls.

Players also have a Rank – the characters level in their chosen career, and Debt – how much is owed to their chosen career. Both of these will be determined during the career part of character creation.

Like Traveller, there are careers: Nobility, Fighter, Bene Gesserit, Mentat, Suk School, and Merchant. Also as in Traveller, players roll to join a career, and then go through a series of terms. Each term, players roll for the following possibilities:

    • Gain a point in a Skill
    • Gain a point in a Characteristic
    • Gain a point of Debt
    • Roll to reenlist for another term.
    • Roll to survive the term (Yes, you can die in character creation, just like Classic Traveller did it)
    • Roll to increase in Rank

One interesting bit: If either Rank or Debt rise to 6 during character creation, the character is considered too important or indebted to their service, and the character immediately becomes a NPC under GM control.

After leaving the career, the player can roll on an event table for each term completed. The table gives a background event, a Skill boost, and asks the player to choose which other player was involved in the event. The idea being to create relationships between the PCs before the game starts.

    Skills

This is where the PBTA influence is strongest. When using a skill by itself (not in a contest), they work like PBTA moves, in that a player rolls a 2d6 + skill level. If the result is 8+ the player, depending on the skill, can ask the GM a number of questions that the GM must answer honestly, or gain some other information or advantage.

Most of the skills will be familiar to Traveller players, though there are those that are more Dune-specific – Voice, Prana-Bindu, Computing (Mentats only).

There’s also a Sex skill, which I’ve never seen in any version of Traveller or the Cepheus Engine.

    Contests

Any conflict, whether, physical or social is considered a contest. Characters choose the skill they’re using to attack, and roll 2d6 + Skill level. Anything above 8 is considered a hit, and the target will take damage to their stats. Physical damage is usually to Strength, Dexterity, and Endurance, while social damage is to Stoicism, Education, and Social Standing.

If a stat is reduced to zero, the target is either dead or knocked out the contest in some way.

When a player rolls successfully, every point above 8 is considered hold. Hold can be spent to reduce damage, or other effects. Players start out with hold equal to their skill level.

    Other Stuff

    Some other odds and ends:

    • A list of Powers – special abilities that can happen in character creation(Face Dancing, Limited prescience, etc.)
    • A short list of Dune-specific equipment – Lasguns, shields, etc.
    • A list of possible scenes
    • A D20 table of random events to shake up a game.

    Conclusions

I haven’t actually run Spice World, so I don’t know how any of this runs in practice, but it looks really fascinating. I’ll probably try to run it with one of the adventures from the official Modiphius Dune RPG, or perhaps the Cepheus setting Godstar.

Again, this is a fan project, targeted at experienced GMs. Not everything’s fleshed out. You’d have to be somewhat familiar with both Traveller and PBTA to get the full use of out this.

I’m a little biased on Spice World, as a game with Traveller + PBTA + Dune kind of hits a sweet spot for me, but the book is both interesting and free, so I’d recommend downloading it.

  10. Happy birthday to #Spiceworld!

"A $100m (£83m) success on the back of a $5m (£4.13m) budget, not bad for a largely plot-free hodgepodge of celebrity cameos, surrealist dream sequences, Tardis tour-buses, movie pastiches, Girl Power wisecracking, and close encounters with horny aliens, which was panned by critics at the time."
