Was mir seit der Neuinstallation von #Arch #Linux partout nicht gelingen will, ist #vim zum #spellcheck in #Deutsch zu überreden.

Meine .vimrc ist unverändert, so wie es in der alten Installation funktioniert hat. Warum es jetzt nicht mehr will, finde ich einfach nicht heraus.

Again, I wish one could remove words from the #spellcheck dictionary in Kate text editor, not just add them. If I type "wether," it's either a typo for "whether" or "weather."

A "wether" is "a castrated goat/ram," a word I assure you I'm never talking about. The spellchecker won't flag it.

Okay Firefox, that's a little bit racist. Just bc they are stereotyped as liking gold and wealth doesn't mean dwarves are like... literally adware. Wow....

OK Firefox spell checker, my bad it's "car park" two words, not one. But what are the chances of someone writing "carp ark"? Maybe the fish prophet receiving a Lovecraftian covenant from Dagon?!

And "cark" was a new word to me - evidently Aussie slang for "die".

I'm going to start keeping track of words gDocs makes up. These are suggested spelling corrections, only the suggested word does not exist in English. It's just statistically probable.

On one hand, highlights just how many "pseudowords" are available (i.e. they follow phonetic rules for English but don't have any semantics attached), on the other, super distracting from doing actual writing.

Today's entry is "quistible" - I was aiming for quizzical.

Does anyone have a decent solution for syncing spell-check dictionaries (custom/user-added words, not the default wordlists) across computers? How about across applications?

It annoys me that I'm constantly adding the same words and abbreviations to the same 3-4 apps on *every* computer I use. Presumably I'm not the only one.

However, this forlorn, decade-old question makes me think that perhaps we really don't have a solution:

Am i alone or there are other folks also who use search engines for spelling corrections. most spell checkers can’t find the right word which search engines generally provide as suggestions.

Heh, my browser flags "Bouguereau" as a misspelling...and suggests "Boulderer" as a correction. Admittedly "William-Adolph Boulderer" does sound like someone who might be a painter, but that'd be a different man from the one we're talking about! 🙃

There are lots of tips for #writers about do this and don't do that, but one thing that is very important is to be aware of homophones.

There and Their are common ones but there are actually a lot more (depending on your accent) than you might first realise.

course/coarse, hanger/hangar, led/lead, etc.

It's so very easy to miss these, even if you know the correct spelling.

Not only that, there are also words of similar spelling that mean very different things. I posted a toot the other day about the words Torturous and Tortuous. But there are also things like Tentative and Attentive.

And stupid spellcheck won't spot any of these!

I just wanted to run #spellcheck on my #thesis that I wrote in #TeXLaTeX using #Kate and #KWrite. Since the text is in #German, I thought "Surely, it's going to recognize all the LaTeX tags as misspelled words."

Nope. It only spellchecks the actual text. Like it should be. The attention to detail in @kde and general #OpenSource software surprises me over and over again.
