  1. Sabem speed reading?

  13. #SpeedReading doesn’t work
I read a lot—my profile picture should give a hint. A few years ago, I took a course that promised to double my reading speed without harming my comprehension. I was sold snake oil. The common techniques for speed reading either don't work or reduce reading comprehension.

  14. @Cetraria @stepheneb I learnt speed-reading at uni from someone who was very dismissive of the intelligence of people who vocalise while reading 😖

I could read a paragraph or two quite quickly by the end of the half-day course, but practically none of it actually went in to my head, so it wasn’t useful to me at all 😕

  15. My "#speedReading" basically brings me up to "normal fast" since I'm a slow reader. I am considering seeing if I can get #Calibre to embed the #OpenDyslexic #font since that also improves reading speeds...

  16. This blew my mind: instead of sounding out words in your head while reading, you can just count and look at the words.
So now I’m counting in my head but somehow the words also flow into my brain. What is happening.

  17. Lol. Got blocked on Facebook because I asked if there were any article alternatives to a YouTube rant someone posted.

I rarely watch opinion pieces on YouTube. First, YouTube’s advertising policy encourages people to ramble on for ten minutes instead of being short and concise. Second, I read faster than people talk even when they aren’t trying to pad out content for monetization.

Any legitimate news or concerns get real articles somewhere anyway.

  18. Pasted a ~1200 words article into flathub.org/apps/com.github.Da, set to 200ms/word (150ms felt unpleasant). It took 4 mins to read, but I felt rushed & didn't feel like I understood 😐️ At barely 300 words/minute!

Now I read the article normally: 2min30s, & it felt relaxed.
I tried another: 2450 words in 5 mins.
    That's 480 words/min… and I'm not trained in #speedreading!

I guess I read blocks of words, not words 🤔️
Is a word-based speed #reading app useful to anyone?

  19. The fact that I couldn't read Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance word for word probably contributed a lot to developing a sense of Zen

  20. If you do much reading on a tablet or mobile, Comfort Reader might be of interest... Certainly takes some getting used too though.. Available from @[email protected]

  21. Train Yourself to Read Faster (And Comprehend What You Read) With This Site - A Case for eBook Readers?

Being able to read things quickly is great, but only if you’re able to comprehend what you’re reading. Blazing through 200 pages of reading in an hour or two is certainly impressive, but if you don’t remember anything you’ve read then it’s also kind of pointless.
Research has shown that the average reader can handle reading 200 words per minute with a 60% comprehension rate if they’re reading words on a traditional page left to right. If you want to comprehend more, you’ll need to slow that pace down or try reading in a different way.
If you instead read just one word at a time, you can bump up that word-per-minute number by reading just one word at a time. squeet.me/objects/962c3e108283
